Marathon County Supervisors Give Final Approval to $55 Million Highway Department HQ
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Highway Department will officially vacate its Wausau facility on West Street. Supervisors have signed off on a $55 million project in Kronenwetter, consolidating the main facility and a satellite garage in Mosinee. Deputy Administrator for Public Works and Capital Projects Chris Holman says the current facility is no longer efficient, meaning important equipment has to sit outside. That may not seem like a big deal, but Wisconsin winters have a way of taking their toll on everything.

Your letters: Wausau’s budget problems go deeper than a 6.76% tax increase
I should not have done it. I should not have picked up a copy of the City of Wausau’s 2027 proposed budget. But old habits die hard. What did we get this time? The budget proposes a 6.76% increase in the tax levy—nearly twice the rate of inflation! It is the largest increase in decades. A person would probably have to go back to the inflationary period of the 1970s to see a number that big. Moreover, the city is proposing this despite concerns about housing affordability and at a time when both Marathon County and the Wausau School District are lowering their property tax rates. It is a budget that is completely untethered from reality. It is a budget from inside the city hall bubble.
