20 train cars derail near Pyote, investigation ongoing

WARD COUNTY, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – More information has been released regarding the train derailment involving about 20 cars, near Pyote Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Ozuna with the Ward County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the railroad tracks near Interstate 20 between mile markers 62 and 63 in reference to a train derailment.

The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, but the only two people on the train were the conductor and the engineer. No vehicles or pedestrians were on the roadway, and Captain Ozuna said the train was the only vehicle involved.

Roads in the area remain clear, with the closest road being the I-20 frontage road, which is clear and unblocked, though there is currently no timeline on when the cleanup is expected to be complete. None of the train cars contained hazardous materials.
