At long last, Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market’s ownership filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Tuesday, May 14. The filing comes four days after Foxtrot’s assets were snapped up for $2.2 million at an auction held on Friday, May 10, according to Crain’s — and as rumors swirl that Foxtrot co-founder Mike LaVitola is attempting to revive Foxtrot and reopen as many as 10 locations.

Owner of the revived Upper East Side tavern Hoexters and Flex Mussels, Alexandra Shapiro has teamed up with chef Harold Dieterle. Dieterle, the first winner of the debut season of Top Chef owner for the late Perilla and Kin Shop in the Village, will open Il Totano (“the squid”) on Monday, May 20. The Southern Italian restaurant in what had been a Flex Mussels location at 154 W. 13th Street, near Seventh Avenue, is an airy 80-seat spot with 1970s Italian holiday vibes. Dieterle says he was “doing a lot of fishing,” during the pandemic, which came with a lot of dry-aging: That aged fish inspires the centerpiece of the restaurant’s menu and the space, which includes a dry-aging fridge in the dining room. In addition to crudos, the menu revives Perilla’s spicy duck meatballs and pastas will include the new restaurant’s play on linguine and clams with ramps and guanciale. “It will be a seasonal menu that keeps things moving,” says Dieterle.

Ford Fry’s taco and chicken al carbon spot, Little Rey, opens a second location at 3705 Northside Parkway NW, in the Northcreek Office Park redevelopment, next Monday, May 20. The restaurant, which opened in 2019 in Atlanta’s Piedmont Heights neighborhood, serves breakfast tacos, street tacos, and wood-roasted yardbirds. To celebrate the opening, Little Rey is hosting a party on Saturday, May 18, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a free queso fountain, tacos, smoked wings, and soft serve ice cream in flavors like dulce de leche.

Restaurateur Christopher Bredesen opened Riviera Mexican Cantina in Redondo Beach on Monday, May 6, in the prime waterfront location previously occupied by the Brazillian steakhouse Samba by the Sea. As the owner of Captain Kidd’s Fish Market in Redondo Beach and Torrance’s Primo Italia, Bredesen is no stranger to running restaurants in the South Bay. His latest project may be his most ambitious yet. The city’s best place for Mexican seafood is expanding. Known for its aguachiles and shrimp cocktails, Mariscos El Submarino, opened in Jackson Heights in 2020: Now owners Alonso Guzman and Amy Hernandez are opening a second location in Greenpoint, according to Guzman. The restaurant will replace Mystica, which Guzman opened last year at 222 Franklin Street, near Green Street. It closed this spring.

Almanac Beer Co. will open a taproom inside West Oakland’s much-anticipated Prescott Market, a 12,000-square-foot food hall planned for 1620-1640 18th Street. It’ll be the second Almanac outpost in the Bay Area, joining the existing taproom in Alameda at 651B West Tower Avenue. The West Oakland taproom is expected to open this summer.
