America’s first twin-screen movie theater has closed on the Upper East Side after 64 years, — its building is being sold for $41 million

The Upper East Side just lost a piece of movie history. Cinema 123 by Angelika , the Third Avenue theater that opened in 1962 as what’s been called the country’s first twin-screen cinema , has permanently closed after 64 years . The three-screen theater at 1001 Third Avenue, between East 59th and East 60th Streets, held its final screenings on Thursday, October 29, and the closure took effect the next day. The farewell notice kept it short, but it ended on a sweet note: “As our final credits roll, we thank you for being part of our story.” 64 years across from Bloomingdale’s The theater debuted in 1962 as Cinema I & II, described by 6sqft as the first twin-screen cinema in the country . A third screen arrived in the 1980s, and eventually the name became Cinema 123. Over the decades, its screens mixed independent, foreign and mainstream films, which made it a true neighborhood go-to. For generations of Upper East Siders, it was the easy plan: catch a movie across from Bloomingdale’s, grab dinner nearby, no trip downtown required. A $41 million sale The closure wasn’t a total surprise. Reading International, the parent company of Angelika, bought out

NYC Rent Freeze Program to Cover More Seniors and Disabled Tenants

NYC Rent Freeze Program to Cover More Seniors and Disabled Tenants. New York City’s Rent Freeze Program lets eligible older tenants and tenants with disabilities lock in their rent, so future increases are covered by a property tax credit to the building owner instead of coming out of their pockets. The state has raised the program’s income limit from $50,000 to $75,000, the first increase since 2014, a change Sen. Liz Krueger says will let thousands more New Yorkers enroll in the NYC rent freeze program. The city still has to finish adopting the new limit, which Krueger expects by the end of November. It covers rent-regulated apartments, including Mitchell-Lama and HDFC housing, and Krueger’s office is offering one-on-one application help at a clinic on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Call 212-490-9535 to book a spot. Slots are limited, and there are no walk-ins.

One of NYC’s final Gilded Age buildings sells for $42M — but is set for heartbreaking demolition

More than a century ago, New York’s wealthiest families built palatial mansions along West 57th Street, filling them with the splendor of the dazzling Gilded Age. Now, one of the last survivors of that vanished world has changed hands for a staggering $42 million — and could soon make way for a new monument to Manhattan’s immense wealth. The historic Schieffelin-Bowne House at 35 W. 57th St., a five-story Beaux-Arts mansion dating to 1891, has been sold to New York-based developer Sedesco, giving the firm essentially the final piece of a yearslong assemblage for a soaring luxury skyscraper on Billionaires’ Row. The historic Schieffelin-Bowne House has sold for $42 million. Olga Ginzburg for the N.Y. Post The Soloviev Group sold the property in a deal that closed Oct. 29, according to city property records. The acquisition represents essentially the final property needed to complete Sedesco’s sprawling development site, according to a source familiar with the project. With the land now largely assembled, the developer is expected to unveil updated plans in the coming months, the source added. As recently as March, Sedesco had demolished neighboring buildings at 37–47 W. 57th St. but had yet to file construction plans. For the
