Nassau County's transgender athlete ban overturned

(The Center Square) — A New York appeals court has struck down Nassau County's ban on athletes born male competing in girls' and women's sports. The ruling by the New York Appellate Division, Second Department, declared the Long Island county's law that bars transgender women and girls from participating in women’s sports at county-run facilities is illegal because it violates the state's Human Rights Law and Civil Rights Law prohibiting efforts to restrict access to places of public accommodation "based on a person’s gender identity or expression, including whether the person identifies as transgender.” "Although a local government is constitutionally empowered to enact local laws relating to the welfare of its citizens through its police power, it is prohibited from exercising that power through the adoption of local laws that are inconsistent with the New York State Constitution or any general law of the state," the panel of judges wrote in the three-page ruling. The decision, which is expected to be appealed, stems from a lawsuit filed by the New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which claimed the restrictions signed into a law in 2024 by Nassau County Chief Executive Bruce Blakeman in July violated the state's

25 Famous People You Didn’t Know Were From Flatbush, Brooklyn

Few Brooklyn neighborhoods can tell their history through as many different kinds of famous people as Flatbush. Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond walked the halls of Erasmus Hall High School before either became a recording star. A future Supreme Court justice grew up in a Brooklyn household that prized education. An illustrator who would help invent modern television cartoons, an Oscar-winning actress, and a writer whose childhood experiences became material for his novels all have stories tied to the neighborhood. Even the list of names associated with Flatbush’s later hip-hop culture would fill an article of its own.

Mayor Mamdani's viral clap back at JD Vance might go down in social media history: 'Craziest ratio'

Zohran Mamdani has gone viral over his brutal reaction to JD Vance trying to claim his achievements as the Trump administrationâ s. Despite facing rampant Islamophobia while on the campaign trail and beyond, Mamdani was voted the Mayor of New York City in November 2025, making history by becoming the first Muslim mayor. Since taking office in January, Mamdani has been praised for instituting a string of positive changes for the city, with New Yorkers actually able to see the fruits of his labour . So, when vice president JD Vance posted, â We got your back, New York!â with a list of accomplishments on X/Twitter claiming the Trump administration had delivered them for New Yorkers, Mamdani was not going to let him get away with taking the credit. In his genius response, Mamdani quoted Vanceâ s post and added a video of a man pretending to manually stop a subway car and open the doors when they already do it automatically. And itâ s a burn that may well go down in social media history. At the time of writing, Mamdaniâ s post has more than 1.4 million likes, compared with Vanceâ s 8.6 thousand. Someone wrote: â This
