Alcoa school board approves future calendar, tighter background check requirements
The Alcoa School Board approved its 2027-28 academic calendar and finalized stricter background check requirements for school volunteers and outside personnel during its regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 20. The new calendar eliminates the half days included in the current school year’s schedule, following a review process that administrators said solicited feedback from teachers, administrators and other school employees. Assistant Director of Schools Scott Porter told the board that the calendar was developed by a committee that considered several drafts before bringing its recommendation to the board. Under the approved calendar, teachers will return July 12, 2027, with student registration scheduled for July 16. The school year will conclude in May 2028. Board members also approved the district’s annual Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement accountability report, which showed students exceeding the district’s academic performance goals in both math and English language arts. The report outlines the district’s academic performance and improvement goals under Tennessee’s school funding formula. According to the report, 57.9% of students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded expectations in math during the 2025-26 school year, surpassing the district’s goal of 55.2%. Third-grade English language arts proficiency also exceeded the district’s target, with 51.7% of students meeting or exceeding

Dominant second half clinches win for Sweetwater, home playoff game
Friday night was more than just a win over a Region 2-3A foe for Sweetwater. When the Wildcats outscored McMinn Central 20-0 in the second half in Englewood to win 48-20, they also secured second place in the region and clinched a first round playoff game at King Berrong Field. “We feel good. We’re really excited about that,” Sweetwater head coach Tommy Bunch Jr. said after the game. “We felt like we should’ve had the first round playoff game last year, so it’s a long time coming.” Meigs County secured the first place spot with its win over Austin-East and now the Chargers and Roadrunners will battle for the third and final playoff berth this week. As for last Friday’s game, the Wildcats threw the ball around more than normal in the first half, but settled on their bread and butter power run game in the second half. The Wildcats rushed out to a 14-0 lead, but the Chargers hung around to trail just 28-20 at the break. “We saw our guys in the first half not be able to put the game away,” Bunch said. “We could’ve gotten out to three scores on them a couple of times, but

Cosby ready to battle Jellico for Region 1-1A title on ‘The Hill’
COSBY — All season long, the Cosby and Jellico high school football teams have been moving in the same direction. Those paths finally will converge in what amounts to a Region 1-1A championship game this Thursday evening as the Eagles host the Blue Devils at Virgil Ball Stadium. The winner will get the trophy while the loser still will receive the consolation of a home start to the state playoffs. But that trophy is pretty darn appealing to everyone involved. “We’re really excited,” said Cosby head coach Levi Cooper. “It’s a huge opportunity for our football program and our community to be able to host a region championship game. It’s kind of what you talk about in the offseason. It’s the reason we do the work. “Those days lifting and working out and practicing were to give us this opportunity. We’re super-excited about it. We expect it to be a huge crowd and a physical, tight, four-quarter football game. I think it’ll be a really great atmosphere.” It is the second straight monster matchup for the Eagles (8-1, 6-0), who traveled to Hampton last Friday and stormed to a 46-30 victory to set up this winner-take-all opportunity. Cosby started its
