Suns fire Frank Vogel, NBA world reacts

For the third time in three seasons, the Phoenix Suns will have a new coach to open the next NBA season.

After the 2022-23 season, the team fired head coach Monty Williams just one season after going a franchise-best 64-18 and two seasons after making it to the NBA Finals for the third time in franchise history.

Former Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel was tabbed to take over for Williams.

With the offseason addition of longtime Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal to join Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, it looked like the Suns would be one of the teams to beat in the West. But unfortunately for Vogel and the Suns, things never quite seemed to click for the three players together. The Suns went 49-33 and finished with the Western Conference’s sixth seed, where they were swept out of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Their season ended already, and it’s been a waiting game to see what came next.

Their underwhelming season and postseason performance wound up costing Vogel his job, as the team announced Thursday afternoon that they were parting ways with the coach after just one season.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania had the news first on Thursday afternoon.

While things didn’t work out for Phoenix, it’s hard to imagine a new coach being the answer that fixes everything. It’s a similar situation to one that the Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in at the moment, where the true issue is roster construction.

Social media had plenty to say about the news.
