Jalen Brunson has blunt take on Knicks season

The New York Knicks did not enjoy a successful 2023-24 season. That’s at least the opinion of the man who was their best player throughout the season, Jalen Brunson.

Sunday’s 130-109 loss to the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals marked the end of New York’s season.

Julius Randle missed the postseason recovering from shoulder surgery. Isaiah Hartenstein and OG Anunoby both suffered injuries in the series. Anunoby tried to play in Game 7 but could only manage five minutes. Then, later in the game, Brunson himself broke his hand. While injuries in the playoffs are a big deal for any team, they’re an even bigger issue for the Knicks, who — even at full strength — dealt with depth issues throughout the season.

But none of that mattered to Brunson, who made it clear in his postgame press conference that the season was not a success in his eyes.

“Did we win a championship? Did we get close? So, no. That’s my mindset. That’s just how it is,” Brunson said, when asked about whether the season was successful.

The Knicks made the playoffs for the third time in four years, reached the Eastern Conference semifinals for a second straight season, and won 50 games for the first time since the 2012-13 season. So, while the season may not have been good enough for Brunson to call it a success, he and the Knicks do have a lot to build on going forward.
