Traffic Stop Leads to the Arrest of a Page County Man
(Corning) A Page County man faces drug possession charges following a traffic stop in Adams County. Adams County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 34 and Chestnut Street late Saturday night. During the investigation, deputies charged the driver, 36-year-old Jory John Larkin, of Clarinda, with possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, and OWI, 1st offense. Deputies transported Larkin to the Adams County Jail and held him on a $2,300 bond.

(Corning, Iowa) – The Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Sunday, released a report on six arrests that occurred from Feb. 24th through March 18th. On Saturday (March 18), Adams County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 34 and Chestnut. Upon investigation, 36-year-old Jory John Larkin, of Clarinda, was arrested on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Poss. of Drug Paraphernalia, and OWI/1st offense. Larkin was being held in the Adams County Jail on a $2,300 cash-only bond.
Four Blighted, Residential Properties in Red Oak to be Demolished to Make Way for Future Development
(Red Oak) The Southwest Iowa Housing Trust Fund (SWIHTF) Board recently approved four applications submitted by the city of Red Oak for the demolition program. The demolition program, which is funded through SWIHTF, is designed to assist cities with the cost of demolition of blighted, residential properties. SWIHTF will pay 50% of the cost, up to $15,000, for demolition of the city owned properties. Over the past seven years, the trust fund and partnering cities have demolished 37 dilapidated houses that were beyond repair.
Page County conservation proposing drone policy in county parks
(Clarinda) -- Page County conservation officials are proposing a drone-use policy in and around county parks. That comes after a discussion at the Page County Conservation Board's latest regular meeting, where Conservation Director John Schwab formally introduced a policy limiting where drones could be flown within county parks. Schwab tells KMA News the board has been looking into a policy for the past couple of months and tailored their version off of others in place around the state. He says discussions arose due to the county's current lack of drone regulations near its parks.
Shannon City man injured in Union County wreck
(Creston) -- One person was injured in a single-vehicle accident near Creston Monday night. The Union County Sheriff's Office says the accident occurred on Pole Road south of Creston shortly before 9 p.m. Authorities say a 2005 Ford F350, driven by 31-year-old Brandon David Frey of Shannon City, was travelling southbound on Pole Road when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and into the east ditch. The Sheriff's Office says the vehicle then went airborne over a fence and into a field before rolling and coming to rest on its wheels. Authorities say Frey was partially trapped and could not get out of the vehicle on his own.

Red Oak schools exploring cell phone limitations
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak school officials are giving a "hard look" at possible cell phone limitations or even bans during school hours for students. That's according to Red Oak School Superintendent Ron Lorenz, who informed the Red Oak School Board during its latest regular meeting, that administrative members and teachers have begun preliminary conversations on a policy. Lorenz says the discussions come after schools in the surrounding area and states are beginning to adopt similar policies regarding cell phones, which he adds can often be "counterproductive" to an educational mission.
Red Oak Police Report 2 Arrests
(Red Oak) Red Oak Police arrested 35-year-old Prince Marquis Rashad Shaw and 28-year-old Casaundra Anne Bookout in the 200 block of West Coolbaugh for Violation of a Protection Order. Officers transported Shaw and Bookout to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held them on no bond.
Interest on the rise in Nodaway Valley boys and girls golf programs
(Greenfield) Kaden Herr and Brandon Raasch are the two seniors for the Nodaway Valley boys golf team. Coach Joel Klobnak expects another strong season from Herr who led the team in nine hole average last year at 45.50 followed by Bradley Gebbie’s 47.67. A breakout candidate is junior Landon Klobnak. “He’s been working his butt off all winter long. I have a feeling that it’s going to pay out when it comes to chipping and close game. We are going to do our best to really focus down on putting this year. That’s where he got in trouble the most last year. Combine all those together and I think he’s going to be one of the leading boys.”
Eastern Avenue closure, reconstruction slated to begin this week in Red Oak
(Red Oak) -- A major road reconstruction and closure is set to begin in Red Oak this week. Meeting in regular session Monday night, the Red Oak City Council received an update from Street Superintendent Chris Baird on the Eastern Avenue Reconstruction project. Plans originally called for construction crews to arrive in May. However, Baird says the project's contractor and engineer, Snyder and Associates, advised the city earlier this month that crews are planning to arrive this week to begin the extensive surface and water main replacements starting at Summit Street and moving south to Forest Avenue.
Initial report of Red Oak housing options completed by committee
The Red Oak Rural Housing Readiness Assessment committee has completed its initial report on housing in the community. The assessment was part of collaboration between the Montgomery County Development Corporation, the City of Red Oak, Iowa State University Extension, and the Iowa Economic Development Authority. At the Red Oak City Council meeting March 6, the council heard from spokesperson Joey Norris, who shared that a 160-page report had been drafted and presented to the council.
Red Oak man held on $40,000 bond
(Red Oak) The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40-year-old Anthony David Smith, of Red Oak. Smith was arrested Friday at 10:50 a.m. in the 500 block of Reed Street on two bench warrants for Violation of Probation. He is being held on $40,000 bond.
Fatal Accident in Page County
(Page Co) A Missouri man died in a single-vehicle accident in Page County. The Page County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the accident in the 1400 block of 310th Street at 5:36 p.m. on Thursday. A reporting party called the dispatch center and notified the dispatcher that there was a man lying outside of the vehicle with no pulse and it was unknown if anyone else was in the vehicle. 63-year-old Ronnie Eugene Hagey, of Burlington Junction, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Page County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Clarinda girls tennis poised for successful season
(Clarinda) -- Last year was special for the Clarinda girls tennis program. The Cardinals enter this year with the opportunity for an even better season. "We're excited," Coach Randy Pullen said. "We were ready to start the season as soon as it ended last year. They're excited to match (last year) or maybe even do better."
Nominations sought for 2023 Outstanding Teacher Awards
(Shenandoah) -- Teachers across KMAland are eligible for a prestigious award. Nominations are now open for the 16th annual Charles E. Lakin Outstanding Teacher Awards. Instructors from non-urban schools within a 40-mile radius of the late philanthropist Charles Lakin's hometown of Emerson are eligible for the award. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Show" Monday morning, spokesman John Paul says Lakin created the award back in 2008 in memory of teachers who made an impact in his life.

Olsen: knowledge leads to Page County veterans served
(Shenandoah) -- Janet Olsen describes her first five years as Page County's veterans affairs executive director as a whirlwind. Olsen took office in February, 2018 after serving as chair of Nemaha County's Veterans Services Board. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Olsen says her office currently serves 823 veterans. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Friday morning, Olsen says the growth translates into more revenues coming into Page County.
Creston airport talks possible projects
The Creston Airport Commission met on Monday to discuss current and future airport projects. Airport manager Brian West and a representative from the engineering firm used by the airport, Bolton & Merk, discussed the current runway project that’s going on, including the progress with it and the timeline to get it completed.
Legendary Lenox football coach Dukes passes away
(Lenox) -- Legendary Lenox football coach Allen Dukes has passed away at the age of 69. Dukes won 158 games in his 21 seasons as the Tigers' head coach. Lenox made the playoffs 13 times under Coach Dukes, including a state championship in 2008 and state runner-up finishes in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
