Special teams loomed large in Sheridan football's playoff loss
COLUMBUS — A script-like night for football was "special" for Michael Thompson-Ayers and the rest of the East Tiger return men. Quite literally, it was their performance on special teams in their Division III, Region 11 quarterfinal matchup with visiting Sheridan that made this night memorable. Thompson-Ayers' 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was East's second long return of the half — Dominique Edwards had a 55-yarder on the opening kickoff — that impacted the game so much that visiting Sheridan didn't even kick their way until the final minute of the second half. It was the key factor in the third-seeded Tigers' 42-28 win before a festive crowd on Nov. 6 at Harley Field. East, which lost in the Division IV quarterfinals in 2025, advanced to face unbeaten Licking Valley at 7 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Randy Baughman Stadium. Ryker Williams rallies Indian Valley football past West Muskingum
Indian Valley football appeared to be in complete control early Friday night, but the Braves needed one final push to keep their unbeaten season and state championship hopes alive. Behind another standout performance from senior quarterback Ryker Williams, top-seeded Indian Valley survived a second-half comeback by West Muskingum, earning a 35-28 victory in the Division IV, Region 15 quarterfinals on Nov. 6. The Braves built a 27-7 lead late in the first half before watching the Tornadoes score 21 unanswered points to take a one-point advantage early in the fourth quarter. But when Indian Valley needed an answer, Williams delivered. After the Braves failed to convert a fourth down, their defense forced a fumble to give the offense another opportunity. Williams capitalized with a 4-yard touchdown run with 6:32 remaining, putting Indian Valley ahead for good. Who's moving on? OHSAA football playoffs 2026: Results from Tuscarawas County “We’ve been facing a lot of adversity this year,” Indian Valley coach Matt Lancaster said. “We know we’re going to get everybody’s best, and West Muskingum is a really good football team.
