Pickens County pumps brakes on data center development

Pickens County Council unanimously approved the first reading of a proposed six-month moratorium on new data center development Nov. 2, giving county officials time to study how the rapidly growing industry could affect the county and what regulations may be needed before projects move forward. The ordinance, identified as No. 694, would temporarily pause data center development while county leaders evaluate zoning, infrastructure and land-use considerations related to the facilities. The proposal advanced by unanimous vote, with all council members present voting in favor of a first reading. The main topic of the first reading was the county council's desire to make Pickens County a safe area from the environmental risks posed by a data center. "I see it more as giving people peace of mind," Council Chair Alex Saitta said. "I don't support them, I'm not going to vote for one, and I wouldn't imagine the majority up here won't." The vote comes weeks after county officials publicly acknowledged that a real estate agent put in an inquiry to the county to gauge its interest in hosting a data center. Town Center master plan envisions more walkable, mixed-use development

This week, the Town Center Community Improvement District provided a first look at its upcoming 30-year master plan at its annual State of the District. The CID is entering its 30th year of operation in 2027. CID leaders met at the Governors Gun Club in Kennesaw to recap some key achievements from its first three decades, and offer a look ahead to the future. The CID serves a roughly 6.25-square-mile area in unincorporated Cobb County and Kennesaw, and includes Town Center Mall. The district, founded in 1997, self-imposes a 5-mill property tax on commercial properties in order to fund infrastructure and community development. “We stand on the shoulders of so many people who came before us, investing in their time and talent and treasure, in order to think about what Town Center could be,” said Tracy Styf, the CID’s executive director. “So for us, with our master plan, it truly is an opportunity to give back to them for everything that they’ve done, but also really look forward to the future and say, what will we look like for this next generation?” In her community update, Styf expressed gratitude for Town Center’s near-30 years of growth and touched on some
