Feds escalate investigation of Duke med school admissions - after UNC made a deal
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has referred its findings about Duke University’s admissions processes in its medical school to the Justice Department — a move the health agency had said it would make if Duke didn’t comply. The Duke Chronicle first reported this story . The health department’s Office for Civil Rights announced the referral in a social media post last week. HHS accused Duke’s medical school on Sept. 8 of using racial proxies that still allow applicant reviewers to consider race, despite the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down affirmative action in college admissions. The result of Duke’s admissions process, HHS said in its letter to Duke , is that admitted Black students had statistically lower Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT, scores and GPAs than admitted white and Asian students. HHS also said Duke failed to produce explanations for the deviations when asked about them. Higher education experts have cast doubt on the legitimacy of the finding, questioning such statistical conclusions based on standardized test performance, The News & Observer previously reported . Ladybirds, Gryphons roll into third round of the flag football playoffs
BAILEY — The Southern Nash High School flag football team rolled into the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A-6A playoffs with a 48-6 triumph over Burlington Williams in a second-round game Saturday afternoon at home. The Ladybirds improved to 17-1 overall and will play Pamlico County (13-2) in a third-round contest at Eastern Guilford High School on Saturday. Williams, which advanced to the second round with a 19-18 victory over Franklinton, ended its season 6-2 overall. Southern Nash took a 7-0 lead with 9:08 left in the first quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run by Aliyah Croll and the conversion run by Leila Gonzalez. Alonna Beacham’s four-yard TD run and another Gonzalez conversion pushed the Ladybirds’ lead to 14-0 with 5:41 left in the quarter. Williams answered with a 70-yard TD pass from Lauryn Kimber to Heaven Carter to cut the deficit to 14-6. The Ladybirds essentially put the game out of reach with a 22-point second quarter.
