Democrats take full control of Pennsylvania government. What does it mean for schools?

Tuesday night’s Democratic midterm election sweep handed the party control of the swing state’s governorship and both chambers of the General Assembly, which could mean significant changes ahead for statewide education policy. For the first time in more than three decades, Pennsylvania will have a governing trifecta. Gov. Josh Shapiro coasted to reelection, Democrats expanded their majority in the state House, and gained control of the state Senate for the first time since 1993. Public school advocates hope the Democratic takeover will accelerate school funding efforts that Republican lawmakers had mostly resisted. Laura Boyce, executive director of the Pennsylvania chapter of the advocacy group Teach Plus, said Wednesday she spoke with lawmakers before and after the election. Their top education issues in the next legislative session will likely be increasing school funding, adding money for literacy programs, and tackling school construction and renovation, according to Boyce. “The divided government excuse for not doing things to help to

Williamsport man creates $100,000 scholarship at Penn College

Williamsport, Pa. — A Williamsport man has established a $100,000 endowed scholarship at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Bill Alsted created the H. William Alsted Endowed Scholarship Fund with the Penn College Foundation. Full-time students enrolled in an associate degree in automotive technology or collision repair technology who intend to add a certificate in automotive restoration are eligible, as are students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in construction management. Preference will be given to students from Bradford, Clinton, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, or Union counties, according to the college. Awards are renewable if the recipient keeps a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. One $5,000 award has been distributed for the 2026-27 academic year. “The rewards of a Penn College degree are well known. By establishing this scholarship, Beverley and I hope more students will have access to that education every year,” Alsted said. “It gives us a great sense of pride knowing that students, especially those from northcentral Pennsylvania, will benefit from the scholarship fund.” “Bill and his partner, Beverley Porter, thought very carefully and deliberately about the establishment of this scholarship and chose the award criteria specifically to benefit Bill’s areas of interest,” said Shanin L. Dougherty, senior

Elections over, Shapiro quiet on commitment to federal school choice program

(The Center Square) – Roughly 1.8 million students in Pennsylvania are potentially impacted by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s waffling over joining the federal school choice tax credit program. With elections in the rearview, its unclear when the administration will publicize its decision. The Center Square was unsuccessful in reaching the governor’s communications team on Thursday. In the meantime, a vocal coalition of program supporters sent a letter to Shapiro encouraging him to opt-in giving families access to educational support long financially out of reach. “That’s what makes this program so exciting,” said Jenny Sved, executive director of Teach PA, and one of nearly two dozen signatories from The Coalition for Educational Freedom, in a statement shared with The Center Square. “Whether it’s helping a family afford Jewish day school tuition, giving a public school student access to tutoring or SAT prep, or providing additional support for a child with special needs, this is a win for families across Pennsylvania.” The proposed program regulations from the Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service allow eligible taxpayers to claim an annual credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions to scholarship-granting organizations, or up to $3,400 for married couples filing jointly.
