City of Pocatello announces new safety improvements projects set to begin this week
The city of Pocatello is partnering with the Local Highway Safety Improvement Program and will soon begin construction on two safety projects aimed at enhancing pedestrian and roadway safety. Construction will begin in this week, weather and other unforeseen circumstances permitting, and focus on North Main Street, North Arthur Avenue and Flandro Drive. The city estimates an August completion for both projects, weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances permitting. The first project will improve pedestrian crossings along North Main Street and North Arthur Avenue in Historic Downtown Pocatello. Enhancements will include sidewalk bulb-outs — extensions that narrow the roadway and shorten crossing distances — as well as curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The city said these upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to improve walkability and increase safety for pedestrians and drivers in the downtown area. The second project will focus on safety improvements at the intersection of Flandro Drive and East Quinn Road. Work will include installation of a raised concrete median, upgraded signage and new sidewalk sections with ADA-compliant curb ramps. These improvements are designed to reduce congestion and minimize vehicle conflicts, particularly those involving left-turn movements. The Local Highway Safety Improvement Program is a

Driver uninjured after manure-hauling dump truck flips at Pocatello interstate exit
POCATELLO — A dump truck carrying manure flipped onto its side while taking an Interstate 15 exit in south Pocatello Monday morning, partially blocking the exit ramp and completely shutting down a nearby intersection. The crash occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. on West Old Highway 91, north of the southbound Interstate 15 milepost 63 exit ramp near Pocatello. A 26-year-old Blackfoot man was driving a red 1992 Kenworth southbound when he was unable to navigate the corner while taking exit 63, causing the truck to overturn on its driver's side. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. The crash caused authorities to shut down the Interstate 15 Portneuf Area Exit's southbound on-ramp as well as the nearby Old Highway 91 and Fort Hall Mine Road intersection. The southbound exit ramp was blocked for approximately two hours as crews worked to remove debris and assist those on scene. Idaho State Police, who are leading the investigation, were assisted by the Bannock County Sheriff's Office, Pocatello Police Department and the Idaho Department of Transportation. The incident remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.

Pocatello's Center Street Underpass project expected to be completed by year's end
POCATELLO — The city of Pocatello continues to make progress on the Center Street Underpass project, a key investment to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity for pedestrians and motorists. This project is a complex effort taking place in a unique environment, with construction occurring adjacent to an active railroad line. Work is being closely coordinated with Union Pacific Railroad and carried out under strict safety standards. Because of the active rail line, certain work must be carefully timed around rail operations, which can affect sequencing and progress. Crews are also navigating typical challenges associated with underground construction in the Historic Downtown area, including large boulders and other obstructions. These conditions require adjustments in construction methods, but work continues to move forward safely. While the city had anticipated opening the underpass to one lane of traffic at this stage, current conditions require continued evaluation to ensure any traffic changes can be made safely. Opening one lane remains a priority and will occur as soon as it is safe for the public and construction crews. "We know this project is important to our community, and we appreciate everyone's patience as work continues," said Mayor Mark Dahlquist. "This is a complex project, but
