Opinion: We are subsidizing our heat, fire and smoke
The BBB increased direct subsidies for fossil fuels another $19 billion over the next 10 years. The same tax expenditures remain in effect and they are very difficult to track due to the complexity and confusion of our current tax code. Subsidies for renewables from the IRA were significantly slashed, and wind and solar projects have been terminated all over the USA despite local support and loss of local tax revenue from these projects.

Opinion: I pulled that dang plug
Before leaving for Patagonia last December, I was in limbo regarding whether to continue my part-time legal consulting and mediation practice. More than a year after Mogul Capital got the Town Council’s conceptual thumbs up for a massive hotel and condominium complex in Jackson’s northern gateway, the Utah-based developer has submitted final plans for its development on North Cache. If given final approval by the Town Council, the approximately 304,000-square-foot project would be the largest development in Jackson’s history. The submittal comes as town officials and residents grapple with the impacts of big buildings in Jackson, a reckoning that began when Mogul first presented plans more than two years ago. “It looks like its own little city,” Perri Stern, a town resident who ran for council in 2024 on a platform of curbing development, said of the updated plans. “Why do we need this? What’s the benefit to our community, really?” Mogul has slightly tweaked its plans since the Town Council last reviewed them in June 2025, cutting back on the number of hotel rooms and condominiums. But that doesn’t mean the project is getting smaller. Approved last June at about 245,000 total square feet — of which 190,000 were habitable and 55,000 parking — the new development plan calls for about 216,000 square feet of habitable
