UMS Board of Trustees meets at UMPI, hears concerns over potential faculty cuts
The University of Maine System (UMS) Board of Trustees (BoT) met on Sept. 28 at 8 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI). The BoT is a 17-member board, 16 of whom are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Maine State Legislature. The board oversees academic programs, tuition, faculty tenure and system-wide budgets. Concerns over proposed budget and faculty cuts at UMaine were raised during the public comment period.

University of Maine System committee backs removal of George Mitchell’s name over Epstein ties
The University of Maine System (UMS) Board of Trustees’ Academic and Student Affairs Committee accepted a presidential task force’s recommendation to remove on-campus references and honors associated with former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell on Aug. 24 in response to his name appearing in the Epstein files. Nearly three-quarters of those who provided responses during the public comment period requested the system cut ties. The recommendation to revoke naming rights will go before the full board for a final vote during a scheduled Sept. 27-28 meeting at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
