Presque Isle Childcare Resource Center Makes Progress
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - United Way of Aroostook is another step closer to their goal of addressing the County’s growing concerns over childcare availability. Recently the United Way of Aroostook announced a new childcare resource center. The Aroostook Partnership has donated $20,000 towards the establishment of the Aroostook Childcare Resource Center. Getting United Way Aroostook much closer to their initial goal of $90,000 to kickstart efforts to address the current childcare crisis.
House Fire in Presque Isle
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - The Presque Isle Fire Department responded to a house fire on 42 Dupont Drive at approximately 2 am this morning. Four occupants were residing in the home and were there during the time of the fire. According to Captain Winston Reed at the Presque Isle Fire Department, the family was alerted to the fire when their fire alarms went off. One occupant had minor injuries and was treated at AR Gould. There were no serious injuries or fatalities.
Clearing Skies Expected Today, Hazy Skies Returning Tomorrow
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Good Morning Everyone and Happy Friday! While we have been off to more of a dreary start this morning, skies are eventually expected to clear out leading us to plenty of sunshine. The clouds this morning have been associated with a weaker disturbance to our west. As it continues to weaken, high pressure will eventually settle into the region and that will result in sunshine continuing straight through the early work week.
From a Race Track to a Movie Theater
CARIBOU, Maine (WAGM) - From a racetrack to a Movie theater Folks at Spud Speedway have found a unique way to give back to the community. For the first time, there will be two drive-in movie nights at Spud Speedway. Tonight and Saturday, folks will be able to watch movies on a 20-foot wide by 12-foot-tall LED screen at the track. All they have to do is get their free ticket at one of the Big Cheese Pizza or Freshies locations.
Caribou’s new code enforcement officer aims to tackle blight aggressively
CARIBOU, Maine — After more than a year, Caribou has a new code enforcement officer who wants to explore ways that the city can combat its most blighted properties. In May 2023, former code enforcement officer Ken Murchison retired, leaving the city without a full-time person to investigate complaints and inspect nuisance or potentially dangerous properties. With no qualified applicants stepping forward, that left City Manager Penny Thompson the acting officer, but other job duties meant she often had to prioritize larger code issues.
Caribou EMS will use $200,000 state grant for staff training, equipment upgrades
CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou Fire & Ambulance has received a major state grant to help fund staff training and modernize the department’s emergency equipment. In 2023, the Maine Legislature enacted the Maine Emergency Medical Services Stabilization and Sustainability Fund, a $31 million grant program to support EMS departments experiencing staff shortages and other challenges in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. Grants ranging from $15,000 to $200,000 are available.
