This NJ pasta shop makes 10,000 ravioli a week the old-fashioned way

Flour. Water. Egg. It starts simply, said Dominick Discenza. Building on those three ingredients with "only the best" in cheeses, meats, spices, herbs and oils is the key to Discenza and his family-run L&D Sapore Ravioli & Cheese in Middlesex. For more than 55 years, the Discenza family has shared Italian traditions, family recipes and fresh pasta through its deli and pasta shop. The shop was recently named to Yelp’s 2026 list of the Top 100 Pasta Places in the U.S. Like many of the pasta shops on the list, Sapore's roots run deep into Italian territory, with chef-owners who hail from traditional pasta makers. Many learned the craft from their families with recipes handed down from generation to generation. At Sapore Ravioli, the story begins in the small village of Baranello, Italy. Dicsenza learned to cook while watching and working with his grandparents before he came to the U.S. at age 12 with his family. They would get milk from the cows, make it into mozzarella. They grew olives to make olive oil. Everything was "in the family," he said. Those traditions and flavors remain with him today. Discenza founded Sapore Ravioli & Cheese in 1970, determined to share

8 exceptional bakeries to get Thanksgiving pies in North Jersey

Getting put on the Thanksgiving pie article is tough, because — contrary to the dinner, which is easy to mess up — I genuinely believe holiday pies are better homemade. For 98% of the time. Buttery crust filled with mom's hand-whisked custard, caramelized apples peeled by grandma; swirl on the whipped cream and you've got a slice of culinary heaven that's impossible to top... ...unless your local pastry shop is run by someone who also happens to bake at that level, in addition to having a cake-centric career, a cookie-inspired Instagram page and a professional dessert education. (Sorry, Grandma. You're not Christina Tosi .) Since I've been assigned this duty, then, I've compiled a few bakeries that can compete with, or — God forbid — surpass, the treats of our most beloved family members. From Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Essex counties, here are eight exceptional bake spots to get Thanksgiving pies in North Jersey. **NOTE: Pre-ordering is recommended, if not required, at most spots. Details included. Black Magic Bakehouse, Ridgewood Black Magic Bakehouse is at the top of the Bergen pastry food chain, as the sourdough destination wows guests with innovative bakes — from Carrot Cake Cinnamon Rolls to Key

7 Feast of the Seven Fishes dishes Italian-American families made for Christmas Eve, from fried baccalà to octopus salad

Christmas Eve in Italian-American households across New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn meant a table loaded with fish and nothing else. The practice comes from the Roman Catholic observance of abstaining from meat on the vigil of Christmas. In Southern Italian families, that abstinence became an occasion, and those families carried it to South Philly, Bensonhurst, and Newark's First Ward. In Italy the meal was La Vigilia; in America it picked up a new name, the Feast of the Seven Fishes.
