Queen Latifah goes back to Newark to build the homes her city needs
Long before the Oscar nomination, the Emmy and the Grammy, before “Ladies First” turned a teenager into a cultural force, Dana Owens, a.k.a. Queen Latifah, was a Newark kid learning the rhythm of her neighborhood’s corners and stoops. Decades later, she went back to those same blocks, this time carrying blueprints.

School lunch periods should be longer
How is lunch supposed to be a meal if it only lasts 20 minutes? In most schools, including Edison Intermediate School (EIS), students have only 20 minutes to find a seat in the lunchroom, wait in line to buy their food, eat, and still find time to talk with friends. Instead of having a relaxing break in the middle of the school day, students have to race against time to survive the rest of the day. In EIS, students have 40 minutes, split into 20 minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for recess outside. Consequently, EIS can enforce a 30-minute eating period and a ten-minute recess period because it helps students perform academically, prevents waste and insect problems, and allows them to eat healthier food options.
