Drivers license no longer issued in Luray
November 2, 1990 — Those who want a Virginia drivers license will have to drive — more than likely be driven — to Front Royal or Harrisonburg. As of today, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has discontinued drivers license service at licensing agencies across the state, including the Luray office at 10 Fairlane Drive. Licensing agent Clifton Campbell said Tuesday that the decision was made as part of Gov. Douglas L. Wilder’s budget-cutting moves.

New I-81 lane opening soon near Staunton
A third northbound lane of Interstate 81 in the Staunton area is scheduled to open the week of Nov. 9, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The new lane will run between exit 222 at Route 250 and exit 225 at Route 262. The opening is part of an ongoing project to widen I-81 in both directions near Staunton. Construction began in fall 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2027. The project also includes widening five bridges, four on I-81 South and one on I-81 North. Construction will continue after the third northbound lane opens. Remaining work includes bridge construction, paving, striping and installation of guardrails and signs. Drivers could encounter shoulder closures, changes in traffic patterns and overnight single-lane closures. The work-zone speed limit remains 60 mph in both directions. VDOT said construction schedules could change because of weather. The project is being completed under a $101 million design-build contract and is part of Virginia's I-81 Corridor Improvement Program. Other I-81 projects planned or underway in VDOT's Staunton District include truck-climbing lanes at Weyers Cave, scheduled for completion in late 2027; southbound widening near Strasburg, scheduled for completion in fall 2028; and widening near Harrisonburg,
