Statesboro Council approves Burkhalter Road design negotiations, transit bus request

Statesboro City Council approved a slate of transportation and insurance items Tuesday morning, August 4, 2025, including authorization to begin negotiations for engineering design work on Burkhalter Road improvements and a request for four replacement transit buses. Council also heard renewed concerns about garbage carts being left along city streets, while City Manager Charles Penny discussed a potential promotional video highlighting Statesboro at an October conference. Burkhalter Road design work Council approved staff entering negotiations with Kimley-Horn and Associates for engineering design services on the Burkhalter Road Transportation Improvements Project. The project includes widening Burkhalter Road from Herman Rushing Road to State Route 67, along with intersection improvements at Cawana Road and SR 67. The City of Statesboro and Bulloch County will each cover half of the design cost. Penny said the Burkhalter Road corridor needs attention because of continued growth and traffic congestion, particularly for motorists turning right onto SR 67. He said the city will return to council once negotiations are complete. Replacement buses Council authorized the city to request four replacement vehicles through the Coastal Regional Commission for Statesboro Area Transit’s FY2028 funding cycle. The city’s local match is estimated at $65,000 from 2023 TSPLOST funds. Penny
