Alumnus will buy land, drop legal case against Anna Maria College

PAXTON – An Anna Maria College alumnus who alleges the college reneged on a promise to gift him part of the campus has agreed to drop his claim and buy the land, court records show. David Roy of Paxton, who sought in August to bar the college from selling 2.4 acres he claimed was rightfully his, reached an agreement to buy the plot for $175,000, court records show. Roy, whose parents owned the college’s food service for three decades, has presented evidence in court that Anna Maria offered to gift him the land in 2023 to “right” an unspecified “wrong,” but ultimately reneged. A Worcester Superior Court judge last summer barred Anna Maria from selling the disputed land, and his lawyers this summer asked a judge to find he held “equitable title” to it and prevent the college from selling it. The college, citing lack of interest, canceled its bankruptcy sale of the entire campus last month, noting at the time it planned to sell 2.4 acres to an unspecified bidder. Recently filed court documents show a judge approved sale of the property to Roy, and that he had agreed to dismiss his legal claims after the sale closes. Roy,

With the MIAA tournament starting this week, and predictions proving to be even more difficult this time of year, I’d like to point out that I’ve correctly picked high school football results in Central Mass. at a 78 percent clip so far this fall. SouthCoast students can apply for $900k in aid

Students across southeastern Massachusetts can apply for more than 65 SouthCoast Community Foundation scholarships totaling more than $900,000, with applications due Jan. 11, 2027. The scholarships are available to students pursuing higher education, vocational and technical education, certificate programs and workforce training, according to a community announcement. Graduating high school seniors, students in technical certificate or trade school programs and current college students can explore the scholarships, with eligibility requirements varying by award. The foundation awarded more than $900,000 in scholarships to more than 120 students in 2026, according to the announcement. The program places particular attention on first- and second-generation college students and students already enrolled in college. Who can apply for SouthCoast Community Foundation scholarships SouthCoast Community Foundation serves 41 cities and towns across southeastern Massachusetts. Communities include Attleboro, Bridgewater, Brockton, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, New Bedford, Plymouth, Somerset, Swansea, Taunton, Wareham and Westport. Students and families can review individual scholarship descriptions and eligibility requirements at southcoastcf.org/2027scholarships . Most scholarships use the foundation's Universal Application, which matches applicants with scholarships for which they may be eligible. Some scholarships require separate applications. The foundation has also revised its application this year to tailor questions to different types of applicants.

One-Year Moratorium Proposed for Rezoning Hampshire College

Using Chapter 40A, Section 5 of Massachusetts General Law, which allows 10 registered voters to petition local government for a bylaw change, 21 Amherst residents submitted a petition proposing a one-year moratorium on any zoning changes to the 600 acres of Hampshire College in Amherst. The petition was filed on October 27. On November 2, the Town Council referred it to the Planning Board to evaluate it and decide whether to hold a public hearing to advance the request.
