Lubbock rising star Aaliyah Chavez surprised with prestigious award

LUBBOCK, Texas — Monterey High School star, Aaliyah Chavez, was surprised with the honor of Texas Girls’ Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year in March.

Chavez has been an absolute force in the basketball scene. Breaking the record of points in a season, points in a career and most three-pointers in a game. Not to mention the school record for most points in a game with 57 points.

“She’s an elite basketball player known for her exceptional skills and undeniable talent on the court, with a passion for the game and drive to succeed. Aaliyah has made a name for herself in the world of basketball,” Lubbock ISD Director of Athletics Mike Meeks stated.

Chavez is also ESPNW’s No. 1 prospect of 2025, Caprock tournament MVP, TABC All-Region, TABC All-State, and All-City MVP and has many other accolades for the 2023-2024 season.

“With an unwavering dedication to her craft and relentless work ethic, Aaliyah continues to impress fans and critics alike with her incredible talent and skill on the court. Keep an eye on this rising star as she continues to make waves in the basketball world,” Meeks said.
