The Miami Dolphins are signing Louisville Cardinals defensive back Storm Duck as an undrafted free agent, according to a report by Aaron Wilson. Prior to his time at Louisville, Duck played for the North Carolina Tar Heels .
In Wilson’s report, he also stated that Duck is earning a $20,000 signing bonus and will be paid $150,000 guaranteed in his deal.
Over the course of his college career, Storm Duck made 135 total tackles. 4.5 of those were tackles for a loss and another was a sack. He also had five interceptions and 24 passes defended. That came during four seasons, with Duck playing in 27 games with North Carolina. He played another season and 13 games with Louisville in 2023. At one point, he had been committed to transferring to Penn State .
2022, Duck’s last with the Tar Heels, was his most productive from a statistical point of view. He had 46 total tackles, three interceptions, and nine passes defended. He also forced a fumble and had a tackle for a loss that season. He was a Second-Team All ACC selection for his performance that season.
Storm Duck played high school football at Boiling Springs (South Carolina), where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,254 overall recruit in the 2019 cycle , according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
The 2023 season was an excellent one for Louisville. The Cardinals went 10-2 during the regular season before losing in the ACC Championship Game and the Holiday Bowl.
Storm Duck is now joining a Miami Dolphins team coming off an 11-6 season where they finished second in the AFC East. That was good enough to make the playoffs, where Miami lost in a freezing game on the road against the eventual Super Bowl champions.
What NFL Draft analysts are saying about Storm Duck
Ahead of the NFL Draft, analyst Lance Zierlein broke down what he sees from Storm Duck.
“While Duck’s size goes to waste as a run defender, he’s more than capable of utilizing it to aggressively contest throws in man coverage. He’s patient to time up jabs from press and does a nice job of bird-dogging the route from trail-man, but speedsters can run away from him as the route progresses,” Zierlein wrote .
“Duck lacks the premium athleticism and closing burst to play from off coverage and still create ball challenges. His size and peskiness at the catch point are tempting, but there might not be enough of the total package in place for him to make a roster.”
