A man suspected of shooting a family member in Cypress Park was taken into custody after being struck by a law enforcement vehicle as he rode a bicycle on a freeway and streets, police said Tuesday.

Officers responded to the 100 block of East Avenue 36, near the Arroyo Seco (110) Parkway, around 11:45 a.m. Friday to reports regarding shots fired, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

``When the officers arrived, they determined that the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old John Lopez, had shot a family member following a verbal dispute and was no longer at the scene," police said in a statement.

An LAPD air unit located Lopez riding a bicycle on the Golden State (5) Freeway shortly after a crime broadcast. Northeast and Hollenbeck patrol units broke up traffic and began following Lopez as he traveled across multiple lanes.

Lopez eventually got off the freeway at the Mission Road off-ramp and continued riding on streets in and out of traffic.

``After Lopez turned north on Daly Street, a Hollenbeck officer utilized his police vehicle to strike Lopez, which caused him to lose control of the bicycle and fall onto the roadway," police said.

Lopez was taken to a hospital after complaining about pain in his knees and was treated before being booked on suspicion of attempted murder. Officers recovered a small caliber firearm while taking Lopez into custody.

The victim was held overnight at a hospital for observation and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

LAPD Force Investigation Division investigators were conducting an investigation.
