Undefeated Georgia high school football team faces GHSA investigation ahead of playoffs

Newton High School's (Covington, GA) undefeated football season could face scrutiny after the Georgia High School Association confirmed it's investigating a report alleging the program used an ineligible player. The GHSA received a report concerning Newton's roster, executive director Tim Scott told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday, Nov. 5. However, the association will not complete its investigation or issue a ruling until after the state playoffs conclude, in accordance with GHSA bylaws. Newton enters the final week of the regular season with a 9-0 record, marking the best start in program history. The Rams are one of the top teams in Class 7A. The potential consequences could be significant if the allegations are substantiated. Under GHSA rules, teams found to have used an ineligible player must forfeit every game in which that player participated. That could include postseason contests, depending on the findings of the investigation. The GHSA has forced five football programs to forfeit at least six games over the past decade following eligibility violations. Several of those cases included playoff victories that were subsequently vacated. Scott cautioned against assuming Newton will face disciplinary action, noting that allegations submitted to the association frequently do not result in penalties. For

Providence Christian loses back-and-forth battle with Commerce

LILBURN — With the Georgia high school football playoffs beginning next week, Friday’s game was a crucial game for playoff positioning and momentum. Commerce running back Demarco Huff had a huge night as he ran for over 300 yards as the Tigers (9-1) defeated Providence Academy (6-4) 42-32 in a battle for second place in Region 8-AA. “We were resilient and kept coming back all night but at the end of the day you simply must make plays against a team like that," Providence head coach Trae Owens said. "Tonight Commerce made more plays than us and of course that is why they won the game. Grayson football closes regular season with home game against Rockdale

After watching a lead slip away at unbeaten Newton on Oct. 16, the Grayson football team delivered one of its most complete games of the season two weeks ago. It stifled a talented South Gwinnett offense and rolled up the points in a convincing 52-0 victory on Oct. 23, taking some positive momentum into last week’s bye. The Rams return to action Friday at home against Rockdale County in the regular-season finale, looking to shore up their state playoff position. Before Friday, Grayson boasts a No. 13 ranking in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings. Rockdale has dipped to No. 37 after its run through a tough region. The Rams’ balanced offense has played better as the season has progressed with quarterback Deuce Smith and a stout running game leading the way. Smith has thrown for 1,472 yards and 13 touchdowns, while a bevy of Rams have shared the carries at running back. McEachern completes undefeated region schedule

KENNESAW — McEachern capped an undefeated region campaign Friday with a dominant 57-0 victory over Kennesaw Mountain, recording its first shutout of the season as the Indians prepared for the state playoffs. The Indians wasted little time taking control, scoring on its opening possession when quarterback Coby Pittman connected with Zyon Robinson on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Pittman added a 29-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter, giving the Indians a 14-0 lead. McEachern extended its advantage when kicker Wes Sheehan connected on a field goal, which was followed by a 66-yard touchdown pass from Pittman to Robinson. Pittman added a 3-yard touchdown run before halftime, sending the Indians into the break with a 29-0 lead. The Indians continued their offensive success in the third quarter. Pittman connected with Jarvaris Reed Jr. on a 32-yard touchdown pass, and James Smith added a 1-yard scoring run to extend the lead to 43-0. Jarvis Nance scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter before backup quarterback Brentoni James threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring. While McEachern's offense found success throughout the night, its defense delivered an equally impressive performance, holding Kennesaw Mountain scoreless for all four quarters.

Collins Hill closes regular season with convincing win at Discovery

LAWRENCEVILLE — Collins Hill senior quarterback Makyree Cross threw five touchdown passes for a second straight week as the Eagles defeated Discovery 56-6 in high school football on Friday. This win puts the Eagles at 5-5 overall, including a 5-1 record in Region 8-AAAAAAA. The Eagles came into the matchup looking to end their regular season on a three-game winning streak while keeping their postseason hopes alive. Eagles head coach Drew Swick is proud of how his team ended the regular season after facing early adversity. “We had to have those losses early on,” Swick said, referencing an 0-4 start to the season. “It was not easy. It was tough but we kept working and kept pushing.” Swick gave credit to Cross and his leadership after losing him to injury earlier in the season. “Cross has been the difference,” said Swick. “He’s QB1 and he’s learned how to lead. He’s taken this team under his arm and has done everything to get the (offensive) line right (along with) everybody else.” Cross’ leadership showed in the game. Lanier has played well during the latter stages of the high school football season, a trend it hopes to continue Friday night at Alpharetta in the regular-season finale. The Longhorns, who currently sit outside the 32-team state playoffs at No. 36 in the Georgia High School Association’s PSR Power Rankings, routed Riverwood 56-0 and Johns Creek 43-14 before giving powerhouse Gainesville a challenge last week in a 29-14 loss. They trailed Gainesvile just 15-14 at halftime and fell behind 22-14 late in the third quarter. It remained a one-score game until Gainesville tacked on a touchdown with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter.
