Atlanta Boomers Are Moving To This Scenic Florida City With Affordable Living And Sandy Beaches

There are many reasons why someone would choose to live in Atlanta. It has a bustling downtown area with attractions and restaurants, and it's a major corporate hub. But for Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who are no longer in the workforce, the hustle and bustle of daily life in the big city may no longer be serving them. For those looking for a more laid-back lifestyle, Florida's Panama City, located in the Panhandle, could be worth considering. Panama City's proximity to Gulf Coast beaches offers opportunities for frequent beach trips, and recent migration data suggests that the surrounding area is attracting some Atlanta baby boomers.

Meet Keisha Lance Bottoms' family, including her husband and 4 kids

Keisha Lance Bottoms will soon be governor of the state where her great-great-grandparents were once enslaved. The former Atlanta mayor was elected governor of Georgia on Nov. 3, making her the first Black woman anywhere in the country to hold that position. Bottoms, who was born in Atlanta in 1970, has said she is the great-great-granddaughter of Shephard Peek, who was sold as a slave in 1826 in Crawfordsville, Georgia. In a 2019 X post , Bottoms said Peek is believed to have become a member of Congress after the Civil War. Two hundred years later, Bottoms was selected to lead her home state, making her one of five Black governor-elects in the United States after Tuesday's midterm elections. Bottoms, an attorney, has been married for more than three decades to Derek Bottoms, whom she met in law school and with whom she shares four children. Here's what to know about Bottoms' family. Keisha Lance Bottoms met her husband in law school Bottoms and her husband, Derek Bottoms, married in October 1994 . They both attended law school at Georgia State University. The two met as first-year law students in 1991 and were engaged in 1993 before graduating in June

Voters veto Mableton redevelopment powers

Mableton voters shot down a ballot measure which would give the city redevelopment powers under Georgia’s Redevelopment Law in Tuesday’s election. The Mableton measure failed with 51.98% of voters, 14,933 ballots, siding against redevelopment powers and 48.02%, 14,796 ballots, cast in its favor, according to unofficial results. Results are not official until certified by the Cobb Board of Elections on Nov. 9. Redevelopment powers would allow the city to carry out community redevelopment, create tax allocation districts (TADs) and issue tax allocation bonds to boost redevelopment. TADs work by freezing property values inside a determined district at a base level. As developers then build developments, increasing property values, tax revenue above the base goes into a fund where it is used to repay bonds or fund public improvements. Once the cost of the redevelopment is fully paid, the TAD ends and all tax revenue is returned to the city. Mayor Michael Owens previously told the Journal redevelopment areas could include the Six Flags and I-20 gateway area and Floyd Road commercial strips. In a statement, Owens recognized the choice of voters not to grant the Mableton City Council redevelopment powers. “While this tool would have allowed our city to implement

Powder Springs appoints new city manager

Powder Springs has a new city manager. The Powder Springs City Council unanimously appointed Tammi Sadler Jones as the city’s new city manager during this week’s council meeting. Jones’ appointment follows the retirement of longtime City Manager Pam Conner, who retired this summer. Jones took over as interim city manager in July, having previously served as the city’s assistant city manager. The council also presented Jones' with a certificate after she was recently honored for 30 years of service to city government by the International City-County Management Association. “First of all, I want to give all honor and praises to God for today. I’m just so grateful for the recognition that you have given to me,” Jones said. She told the mayor and council she was thankful and grateful for their unanimous vote. At the end of the meeting, each of the council members congratulated Jones on her appointment. "I want to say to Tammi, congratulations," Mayor Al Thurman told Jones. "I want you to know, certainly, and to all of your staff, especially since you have taken on the job of interim city manager, the city hasn’t missed a beat." Megan Jackson is a corps member with Report for

Powder Springs approves development with 251 apartments, 24 townhomes

The Powder Springs City Council unanimously approved a development with 251 apartments and 24 townhomes during this week's council meeting. The development, proposed by Wood Partners, sits on 14.65 acres at the intersection of Lewis and Oglesby roads, near C.H. James Parkway. Kenneth Wood with Planners and Engineers Collaborative, representing the project, said the developers met with nearby residents to help shape the plan and decreased apartment height. Plans for the development include two separate residential areas. One side of the property is set to hold 251 multi-family units in four four-story buildings, with 5,200 square feet of amenity space, including a pool. The other half of the property will have 24 two-story townhomes. Between both residential areas, the proposal includes a 17,000-square-foot public park. For the apartment units, 384-parking spaces are proposed. Each townhome would have a two-car garage with space for two additional cars in each driveway. Designs for the property, which backs up to the nearby Springbrooke Estates subdivision, includes a 30-foot landscape buffer, as well as a six-foot fence. A natural tree buffer along a creek, which bisects the property, is included. The development requires a homeowners association. The council approved the development with 13 stipulations,

AROUND TOWN: Georgia’s last Democratic governor has advice for its next one

The day after Georgia elected its first Democratic governor in over two decades, the last person to hold that distinction spoke in Cobb County. Roy Barnes, who served as Georgia’s governor from 1999 to 2003, addressed the Rotary Club of Marietta Wednesday. Georgia’s last Democratic governor opened his remarks by joking that he didn’t know what to talk about. He went on to analyze the 2026 midterm election results from the night before, and gave his perspective on why the Democratic Party had such banner results across the nation. Barnes chalked up the widespread Democratic victories to national frustrations with President Donald Trump’s administration. “Donald Trump crisscrossed primarily the Southeast and Midwest, and told the crowds that were listening, ‘Vote like I'm on the ballot,’” he said. “And they did.” Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected as Georgia’s first Democratic mayor in over two decades since Barnes left office, and became the first Black woman to be elected governor of any state. Barnes expressed optimism about Bottoms’ future as governor, noting she will be Georgia’s first governor since 1966 to not come through the Georgia General Assembly. “I think it's going to be a learning curve for her,”
