Redding declares emergency in anticipation of El Niño, makes plans to clear congested drainage ditch
The Redding City Council voted last night to declare a local emergency ahead of the expected impacts of this year’s El Niño. El Niño is a climate pattern that disrupts normal weather conditions, leading to warmer-than-average temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean. In Northern California, El Niño is predicted to bring warmer temperatures and heavy rainfall this winter, which could lead to severe flooding. This year’s El Niño is particularly noteworthy because it has been projected to break records for its strength, leading to some calling it Super El Niño.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park targets December opening as El Niño winter nears
The strong El Niño being forecast for far Northern California could bring a warmer and wetter season than usual this winter, just as Mt. Shasta Ski Park prepares to open around the holidays for what employees hope will be a busy time. "Everyone's talking about this super El Niño, and we're hopeful it delivers a big winter," ski park spokeswoman Grace Hornbeak said in a news release. "But we didn't want to count on it. Our crew put in a summer of hard work so we can open on less snow and keep runs open longer, whatever this winter brings." Crews cleared brush and cut tree stumps across its runs. The work means the runs will need less snow to open safely, giving skiers potentially more days on the slopes if early-season snow is light, Hornbeak said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's winter outlook, released on Oct. 15, shows more precipitation, but whether that means more snowfall and a fluffy, white blanket for skiers, is not yet known. But Hornbeak said the park is optimistic that the El Niño conditions will bring plenty of snow to the 2026-27 ski season. The ski park is targeting a mid-December opening. Lack
