Weekend Forecast: Fall feeling sweeps back in
REDDING, Calif. — October is the month with the largest drop in normal high temperatures from its first day to its last, but 2026's rendition has been anything but normal so far. Cities like Redding and Chico have racked up five triple-digit days in a month where we typically expect 70s and 80s, and that unusual warmth has carried into the mountains. After all that heat, are we headed towards some normalcy?

Fork Fire in French Gulch 60% contained: UPDATES
Firefighters stopped spread and furthered containment on the 57-acre Fork Fire , burning in the French Gulch area north of Whiskeytown Lake, before fire weather worsened. The fire was 60% contained as of Wednesday morning, Oct. 7, up from 25% on Tuesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Crews planned to spend Wednesday further strengthening those lines and patrolling the burn area for flare-ups, a challenge for firefighters because the terrain is steep and rugged, Cal Fire said. Note to readers: If you appreciate the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight, please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know. The fire grew 11 acres on Tuesday because flames scorched some previously unburned areas within its perimeter, not because it spread out further, Cal Fire spokesperson Jas Shaw said. Cal Fire cautioned about high fire risk in the area due to triple-digit heat in the forecast. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the area, which is in effect at least through 10 p.m. on Oct. 9. Expect light winds up to 10 mph, according to Wednesday's forecast. No 110-degree days but Redding's hot summer was record-setter
It was the hottest summer on record in the United States. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said average temperatures for June-August in 2026 were the hottest for the contiguous United States in the 132 years records have been kept. In Redding? Well, it was hot, but no records. For the second straight year, temperatures in Redding in June, July and August — considered the meteorological summer — were down from two years ago when the area baked through one of the hottest summers ever in the North State. In fact, July of 2024 was the hottest for that month on record. “What the NOAA put out is a broad statement for the contiguous United States,” said Kate Forrest, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Sacramento. “It doesn’t mean that every single city in the U.S.” had record summer temperatures. But Daniel Swain, a University of California climate scientist, said by historical standards, it was hardly long-sleeve weather this summer in Redding and Shasta County. “While it was cooler than the last two summers, it was still among the top five on record on a countywide basis,” Swain said in an email to the Record Searchlight. “Even in

Weekend Forecast: Simmering end to summer
REDDING, Calif. — Summer officially ends on Tuesday at 5:05 p.m. Pacific Time, so we’re staring down our final weekend of the season! What does it have in store?. Well, if you read the headline, you probably already have a good idea. Now two days removed from our stormy setup, temperatures continue their climb on Saturday and push above normal for the first time in over a week. This’ll come in the form of low to mid 90s throughout the valley, and mainly 80s across the higher elevations. Skies look quite clear away from the immediate coastline, where the marine layer should remain stubborn all the way into the new week. Light north breezes like we saw on Friday should continue through the afternoon.
