Modoc football forfeits upcoming game against Redding Christian
Modoc High School has forfeited its upcoming football game against Redding Christian, Modoc head coach James Brogan confirmed. Modoc is 2-4 this season and most recently defeated Shasta Cascade League rival Fall River, 28-14, on Friday, Oct. 2. The Braves have 15 players on their roster, and injuries suffered both before the Fall River game and during practice this week have left Modoc unable to field a team. “We had 12 players on Friday (against Fall River) that we rolled in with, managed to get out of that pretty healthy, came back in the beginning of the week still with 12 guys and then we ended up losing two guys at practice,” Brogan said. Brogan said one of two players injured at practice earlier this week likely suffered a season-ending injury, while the other is set to be reevaluated next week. If the Braves were to compete against Redding Christian on Friday, they would have only had 10 healthy players. The Braves do not have a game on Oct. 16, and they are next scheduled to face off against Weed on Oct. 23. "We're hoping to get (one of the players injured at practice this week) back and then a

Redding K-8 charter school finally building $11M high school
The Redding School of the Arts is finally about to start construction on an $11 million new building dedicated to high school students, long a priority for the public charter school in north Redding . The school off Shasta View Drive now enrolls about 600 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. About 100 high school students learn in modular classrooms that were set up on the campus in 2022. Once the building dedicated to high school instruction opens in late 2027, the facility will be able to accommodate 200 high school students, Executive Director Lane Carlson said. Construction is able to move forward now that the McConnell Foundation has donated 5.9 acres of undeveloped land it owns that is located immediately south of the school's campus, Carlson said. Construction equipment is now on the site and work could begin as soon as Monday, Sept. 28, the day the school is scheduled to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the 12,000-square-foot, one-story facility. RSA officials had hoped to move students out of modular buildings and into the new high school campus in August 2023. But that date kept getting pushed back as construction costs and interest rates rose. Redding architectural firm Nichols,
