Fired executive director sues Le Sueur city, HRA over claims of discrimination

The former executive director of the Le Sueur Housing and Redevelopment Authority is suing the city and claiming that her May 15, 2024, firing violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Melissa Huntington, through her attorney Adam N. Froehlich, of Mankato, says she disclosed several mental health diagnoses, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorder and recurrent major depressive disorder to board members after receiving a negative performance review and the board did not take adequate steps to provide accommodations. The complaint was filed June 29 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Following the review, Huntington formally disclosed her diagnoses and told the authority board she needed reasonable accommodations in order to meet the board’s expectations, the lawsuit states. According to the complaint, Huntington’s evaluation by the board, which was conducted on Nov. 15, 2023, showed she needed to improve her “overall management performance,” “communications/relationship with the HRA board,” “staff supervision and overall performance of HRA staff,” “financial management and project management” and “achievement of goals set by the HRA board.” The review contained several comments, including that Huntington was “unprepared,” “relied on calling other (executive directors) and HUD personnel to complete tasks that she should be able

Demolition of ‘hazardous’ home on First Avenue begins at owners expense

After years of back and forth over the property at the end of First Avenue, demolition on the “hazardous” home began Thursday afternoon. The next of kin of the property owners will be billed for the $44,000 demolition, Faribault Fire Chief Dusty Dienst said. “This one is years in the making. Years and years of neglect. A lack of maintenance over time catches up with any building, and that’s the case here,” Dienst said. “This one was abandoned at least so it wasn’t as touchy as ones where there’s people still living in them.” Dienst said the owners of 1422 First Ave. died years ago, but no paperwork was ever signed to pass the home down to the owner’s family. The fire chief said the city was working with the owner’s next of kin, who were OK with the city’s demolition. “I don’t want to say they’re okay with it because you it’s their home they grew up in, but the reality of it is nobody has the resources to do what the building needs. There’s a reason it’s in the condition it’s in,” he said. “They were on board with the process we’re going through, which is not normal.

For Faribault’s Temple siblings, public service began with family

They grew up only a few blocks from City View Park, where the water tower crowns the Faribault skyline. Today, that childhood view has become a vantage point for governing after siblings Sam and Lexi Temple were elected to positions in the City of Faribault and Rice County. Both will take the oath of office in January, when the duo will look to transform the family ethic of service into policy. Their early priorities include housing and rental licensing, access to healthcare and oversight of the Archer data center project — areas where city and county decisions overlap. “We’ve always had a lot of love for the community. Eventually that love became service,” Sam said. Lexi said her decision to run came later, sparked by policy. “I was disappointed with some of the decisions the current council made on housing stability earlier this year,” she said. “Sam brought up, ‘You could run for city council — there are seats open and you’re passionate.’ Those conversations pushed me to consider it.” The two were elected Tuesday, with Sam defeating Gerry Hoisington to capture a seat on the Rice County Board of Commissioners representing Faribault’s east side and Lexi being one of

New program to help Rice County teens be less distracted on the road

Rice County is looking to implement a new program to help teenagers learning to drive avoid distractions on the road. The “What Do You Consider Lethal?” class from Impact Teen Drivers is already in place in schools in several states, but Lonsdale Police Department Sgt. Jack Schleichert and Grace Pint, the coordinator for Toward Zero Deaths in Rice County, are hoping to integrate it into high schools across the county. “It gives students an idea of what could happen if they were distracted behind the wheel,” Pint said. “It brings in some real life accidents that have occurred because kids were in a car with friends and they weren’t paying attention to the road, and it led to some adverse outcomes that wouldn’t have happened if they were focused on the road.” According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injury for teens between the ages of 15 and 18. MnDOT cites several factors, including distracted driving, as potential causes for this statistic. Toward Zero Deaths is a national initiative that looks to improve highway safety, with a goal of completely eliminating all traffic-related deaths in the United States. The curriculum
