When do newly elected officials start their terms in Stanislaus County and the state?

Once the Nov. 3 election results are certified, how soon do candidates take office? ​For most state positions, they are seated in January. The governor and all other state constitutional offices, including lieutenant governor, secretary of state and treasurer, start their terms Jan. 1 and serve four years, with a maximum of two terms. For state Senate and Assembly positions, winners are sworn in the first Monday in December. Assembly members serve two-year terms, and senators serve four-year terms. They have a lifetime limit of 12 years in the Legislature for both houses. In Stanislaus County, city council and mayor positions are seated Jan. 1. They both serve four-year terms with a limit of two terms. Modesto Irrigation District board members are seated in early December, serve four years and have no term limits. School board members will be seated in January to start their four years of service; there are no term limits for these positions. For the Yosemite Community College District, members take office in December for their first board meeting where they will elect a president and vice-president of the board. Stanislaus County voters are deciding races for mayor, city council, school boards and other local offices in the Nov. 3, 2026, California general election. Among the contests are mayoral elections in Turlock, Hughson, Newman and Patterson, along with city council races in Modesto, Ceres, Oakdale, Riverbank and other communities. Voters are also deciding six local ballot measures and races for Congress, the California Legislature and statewide offices. Stanislaus County races to watch In Turlock, Jim Reape, Amy Bublak and Kelley Coelho are competing for mayor. Modesto voters are choosing City Council members in the 2nd, 4th and 5th districts, while Ceres voters are deciding contests in the 1st and 2nd districts. In the 13th Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Adam Gray faces Republican Kevin Lincoln, a former Stockton mayor. In California Senate District 4 election, Duarte has lead over Brandon in early returns

Republican Alexandra Duarte held an early lead over Democrat Jaron Brandon on Tuesday night in California’s closely watched Senate District 4 race, as both candidates expressed optimism about their chances and emphasized the rising cost of living as a major concern for voters. Early, unofficial election results showed Duarte leading with 123,606 votes, or 52.2%, compared with 113,160 votes, or 47.8%, for Brandon, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office. Additional ballots remained to be counted, and the outcome had not been determined. Nearly 100,000 ballots are uncounted. That won’t change Stockton races much

Just over 90,000 ballots remain to be processed in San Joaquin County in an election where candidates in several local races have already clinched wins. Vote-by-mail ballots received on or before Election Day make up the bulk of those that are unprocessed — 83,239, according to the Registrar of Voters Office. Early results not looking good for Patterson mayor. Challenger leads with 59%

Gabriela Hernandez was ahead in the mayoral race in Patterson Tuesday night, as incumbent Mayor Michael Clauzel tried to hold onto to the city’s top elected post. Hernandez, a council member, had 59.2% in the earliest results, compared to 40.8% for Clauzel. Appointed Councilmember Chinyere “Chichi” Jack was cruising to her first elective term on the Patterson council in District B. Her opponent Carlos Ortega informed local voters in October he was dropping out of the race, though his name remained on the ballot. Jack had 63.9% to 36.1% for Ortega. Councilmember Carlos Roque was not opposed for another term in District D. Clauzel was the subject of an investigation concerning his interrelations with city staff. Last month, City Council members decided not to censure the mayor, but he received a reprimand in a 3-1 vote. A third-party investigation found that Clauzel violated city policies with his temperament in interactions with city employees and that he bypassed city procedures to become directly involved in municipal operations. The motion for a censure resulted in a 2-2 council vote with Jack and Hernandez rejecting it. Jack then made a motion for a reprimand, with only Roque voting ‘no’. Jack said during the

Woman dies from flu in Sacramento County, first death of 2026-27 season

Public health officials on Wednesday announced a woman died from complications related to influenza, making it Sacramento County’s first flu-related death of the 2026-27 season. The woman who died was in her 50s with underlying chronic medical conditions who was not vaccinated against the flu, according to a news release from the Sacramento County Public Health. Officials said the woman developed respiratory symptoms in mid-October and was diagnosed with influenza A. She was hospitalized a few days later and died shortly after. “This is a stark reminder that the flu can cause serious illness and even death, but vaccination remains our best defense,” county Public Health Officer Dr. Phuong Luu said in the news release. “Everyone aged 6 months and older should get vaccinated for influenza now, especially with flu circulating very high in California currently.” Health officials said the county’s first flu-related death this season comes about a month earlier than last year, a death that was reported in late November 2025. They encouraged all residents to protect themselves by getting vaccinated this fall. Rodent enters Sacramento restaurant during health inspection. What else was found?

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to a soul food restaurant after finding about rodent droppings throughout the facility in addition to the live rodent. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee.
