In the early hours of November 23, 2023, Thanksgiving Day dawned with tragedy on State Route 99 near Atwater, Merced County. A head-on collision involving a 2002 Hyundai Elantra and a Chevrolet Tahoe claimed the lives of two Modesto residents, 22-year-old Bryant Noyola and 35-year-old Norma Rodriguez. Noyola, the Elantra driver, was traveling in the wrong direction at high speeds when the vehicles collided near Westside Boulevard, causing the Tahoe to overturn and ignite.
