Illinois 81 work in Kewanee starts Sept. 14 with traffic delays expected
Construction tied to a future reconstruction of Illinois 81 in Kewanee is scheduled to begin Sept. 14 along a stretch from the city's western limits to Lexington Avenue. The work will focus on installing water mains and storm sewers ahead of a $14.1 million roadway reconstruction project planned for 2027, according to an announcement from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Daytime lane closures controlled by flaggers are expected during this phase of construction, which is anticipated to continue through the end of November. Drivers traveling through the corridor should expect delays, slower traffic and intermittent stops while crews are at work. Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes when practical and to watch for changing traffic conditions, signs, workers and construction equipment. Larger reconstruction planned for 2027 The 2027 project calls for a full reconstruction of Illinois 81 and adjacent side streets. Plans include new sidewalks, multipurpose paths and retaining walls. Illinois 81 will be closed to through traffic during that phase and a signed detour will be posted. Access to homes within the work zone will remain available, according to the announcement. Transportation officials also urged motorists to obey posted speed limits and avoid using mobile devices while traveling
