Lessons from Steuben County elections, national trends to local impact

The votes are in and the races are settled in Steuben County. The midterm elections were swept by a blue wave nationally as Democrats took control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives , winning races in areas that have traditionally been GOP strongholds. Meanwhile, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul cruised to reelection over Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, who swung through Elmira while campaigning in the Southern Tier last week in the final days before Tuesday's election. But what about locally in Steuben County? Were the national trends evident in local vote counts? Let's dive into the numbers with five things that happened on Election Day. Democrats make slight gains in NY-23 House race Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-23), who represents much of the Southern Tier and Western New York, avoided an upset that claimed many of his colleagues in the House. Langworthy won reelection comfortably once again in the deep-red 23rd District, taking 60% of the vote with around 99% of the district votes tallied. Democratic challenger Aaron Gies made slight inroads with Steuben County voters compared to the 2024 election cycle. On Tuesday, Langworthy earned 18,709 votes (64.5%) from Steuben voters, while Gies picked up 10,280 votes

Southern Tier trails are a gem. Summit aims to take them to next level

A day-long Southern Tier Greenways Planning Summit, hosted by Parks & Trails New York, took stock of the greenway trail plans already in motion across the region and tackled what it will take to link them into a connected regional network. The event, held Nov. 5 at the Corning Museum of Glass, focused on the eight-county Southern Tier Regional Economic Development region, which includes Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Chenango and Delaware counties. The event paired project updates from local and regional partners with hands-on working sessions on the challenges and opportunities ahead. Kamala Keeley, President of Three Rivers Development Corporation, said trails, waterways and parks aren't amenities on the side; they're part of what makes a region a place people choose to build a life. “When our employers recruit engineers, nurses, and skilled trades, candidates want to know what life looks like outside of work," Keeley said. Residents turn out in strong numbers to vote across Chemung County

It wasn't a presidential election year, but that didn't stop Chemung County voters from turning out in large numbers Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast their ballot in the general election . In addition to contested races for governor, attorney general and other state positions, voters also had to decide who would lead county government for the next four years, with choices for county executive and several legislative seats. Even in smaller communities across the county, turnout was strong, even though off year elections typically don't attract as much voter interest. At the Chemung Fire Department, 291 residents had cast their ballots by noon, which was much heavier than usual, poll workers said. At the Village of Wellsburg/Town of Ashland Municipal Building, the parking lot was full at 2 p.m. and cars were lined up down the street as residents waited their turn to fill out their ballots. Voting at Elmira High School was busier than the last 10 years, election inspectors said. For some residents, exercising their right to vote was a rejection of the status quo.
