Enrollment down, tax levy up after 2026 Appleton school budget passes
School enrollment is down and the total property tax levy is up, according to the final budget passed by the Appleton School Board on Oct. 26. It's the first budget since the school district went to referendum in the 2026 spring election to ask for an additional $15 million a year for four years . That referendum was meant to help the district balance its budget, which in the 2026-27 school year totaled about $302.6 million. That's down about 6.4% from the 2025-26 budget, which was about $323.3 million. Here are some key takeaways: Property tax levy increases by about $7 million The tax levy for 2026-27 is up by about $6.8 million, about 8.3% more than in 2025-26. The total levy is about $89 million in 2026-27 compared to about $82.2 million in 2025-26. That's because the referendum raised the revenue limit, or the amount the district can receive through both equalized state aid and property taxes. In 2025-26, Appleton Schools' overall tax rate was $6.09 per $1,000 of equalized value. Under the approved budget, the tax rate should drop to $6.06 per $1,000, though equalized property values within the district also rose. The owner of a property valued
