New Finger Lakes winery to hold ribbon-cutting, grand opening Saturday
A new Finger Lakes wine-tasting destination featuring a 539-year-old French barn that was relocated to the Town of Hector will hold a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony Saturday, Oct. 24. 1487 Heritage by Domaine LeSeurre is located just off Seneca Lake at 5705 state Route 14 in Hector. Owner Sébastien LeSeurre comes from a family with six generations of winemaking experience in France's famed Champagne region. Céline and Sébastien LeSeurre held a soft opening for 1487 Heritage in early September, but plan to make it official with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring guest speakers starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by an open house from noon to 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend. Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nigar Hale and an as yet unnamed elected official will join Sébastien LeSeurre to speak at the opening ceremony, according to an announcement. The building housing 1487 Heritage was constructed using a French oak barn originally built in 1487 in the Champagne wine region of France, according to Ricardo Amorin, 1487 brand manager. The historic barn was dismantled beam‑by‑beam, shipped across the Atlantic, and re‑erected at the Hector location. More: Burger King in Watkins Glen has reopened, latest in

NY, U.S. quilters come together for National Quilt Project
Fiber artists in New York and nationwide are stitching together a portrait of America. The National Quilt Project is a grassroots movement to gather quilt squares from across the country to make a single patchwork quilt. Each block depicts a piece of America in its 250th year of statehood. Mary Milne, a longtime fiber artist in Ithaca and the project’s founder, said the idea for this stems from The Ribbon , a form of textile activism in the 1980s. "This was a nationwide grassroots project where people all around the U.S. and in other countries made their own fabric panel addressing the threat of nuclear war. We tied these panels end to end, and it went around the Pentagon," Milne recounted. Milne’s project is not political but aims to bring people together at a time when the national social fabric is heavily tattered. Milne explained the project is open to all artists, not just quilters. People can make 18-by-18 squares with ties on them so they can be connected into one massive quilt. As all the quilt blocks are gathered together, they will be displayed in a final exhibition on the National Mall in 2030. Vera Bogle, an Indianapolis-based quilter

Genung Nature Preserve: One of Freeville’s ‘greatest recreational assets’
The Genung Nature Preserve has been a staple not just in the village of Freeville, but in Tompkins County as a whole for nearly 20 years. “This is a great time of year to hike the trails in the Genung Preserve — the air is crisp and clear, and the mosquitoes are nearly gone,” Freeville resident David Fogel said. “Just be sure to take the necessary precautions against ticks. Unfortunately, those nasty critters can survive year-round in our neck of the woods.”

Cornell Batman Returns to Campus to Celebrate Homecoming
Students waved goodbye to Cornell Batman when he graduated. But campus was lucky enough to see him once more this homecoming weekend. If you aren’t familiar with the Cornell Batman, let me introduce you to our informal campus mascot. During his time on the Hill, Cornell Batman often visited Robert Purcell Community Center at night and attended sports events on the weekend. At large, he supported campus pride and spirit through his presence. Upon graduating, older students felt his absence while the incoming freshmen missed his legacy, only hearing bits and pieces of his story.
