N.J. surgeon admits prescribing painkillers to patients who didn’t need them
A New Jersey doctor has pleaded guilty to federal charges of illegally prescribing opioid painkillers. Evangelos Megariotis, 72, of Clifton, admitted to seven counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances in Newark federal court on Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey said in a news release. An indictment originally charged him with 34 counts of the crime.

A 37-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a truck early Saturday on a New Jersey Turnpike ramp in Newark, authorities said. Ryan E. Schmalz was riding on the southbound ramp to Exit 14 at 2:31 a.m. when he struck a truck hauling a utility trailer, State Police said. The truck had been stopped on the access road at the intersection of the ramp and was crossing the ramp when the 2:30 a.m. crash took place, officials said.
