Detroit People Mover public corruption scandal nears convictions

A former Detroit official and a businessman accused of bribing him in exchange for more than $300,000 in phony contracts related to the Detroit People Mover are expected to plead guilty soon, according to federal court records. Detroiter Terrence Parker, 51, is accused of bribing Oak Park resident Michael Anderson, 55, the former strategic sourcing and procurement director of the Detroit Transportation Corp., during a conspiracy that ran from 2023-2025, according to court records. They are each charged with one count of federal program bribery — a 10-year felony — in a criminal information, a type of charge that indicates a guilty plea is expected soon. Parker is set to be arraigned Nov. 13 and Anderson is scheduled to plead guilty Nov. 18. Parker's lawyer, Larry Polk, and Anderson's lawyer, Stacey Studnicki, did not respond immediately to messages seeking comment. The developments are unfolding five months after the duo initially was charged in federal court in what marked a rare new bribery scandal within the ranks of a Detroit city government ravaged by corruption in the last 20 years. Michigan nephew, 4 others convicted for abducting, beating uncle who was gifted $100K in viral video

A Michigan nephew and four others were convicted of abducting and ruthlessly beating his uncle — then leaving him tied up next to his burning truck — in a plot to steal $100,000 he received for helping a seemingly blind influencer . Roland Chatmon, 37, pleaded guilty to kidnapping conspiracy and federal gun charges related to the September 2025 attack on his uncle Curtis Dixon, federal prosecutors in Detroit announced Wednesday . Leica Lopez Martinez, 33, Ieasha Stroman, 38, and Dneiqua Stroman, 43, face the same charges while Kenneth Anderson, 54, previously pleaded guilty to money laundering for his role, prosecutors said. Five people pleaded guilty in Detroit for kidnapping Curtis Dixon (L) to steal $100,000 he received after going viral on TikTok. ABC/wxyz Investigators found the conspiracy began in August 2025 when Dixon went viral for offering to help Zach Dereniowski, a TikTok star known as MDMotivator with more than 28 million followers, who was pretending to be blind for a video. Dixon — who was suffering from financial woes at the time and was planning to pawn his wedding ring — received $1,000 from the influencer for his good deed. Up to half of Detroit Catholic churches may lose weekend Masses under new plans

DETROIT ― Up to half of the Catholic churches in Detroit could stop holding weekend Masses under the latest Archdiocese of Detroit restructuring plan models, a staggering number that's prompting local parishioners to ask where they'll go to church and what may be lost. As the Archdiocese seeks to "right-size" itself amid declining membership, aging buildings and fewer priests, no city is hit harder under the restructuring plan than Detroit. The targeted parishes are spread all over the city, from the east side to southwest Detroit, and many are more than 100 years old. The Archdiocese of Detroit last month released updated models for 15 planning areas across five counties in southeast Michigan, showing how parishes could be grouped under the restructuring plan, following months of feedback from parishioners. Three planning areas focused specifically on Detroit, and two models were proposed for each planning area. More: See the Detroit Catholic churches where weekend Masses may stop Of the roughly 39 Catholic churches now operating in Detroit's city limits, 16 — or 41% — would not offer a Saturday Vigil or Sunday Mass under both restructuring plan models being considered. Another four wouldn't hold a weekend Mass under just one model.

Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,
