This Detroit liquor store doubles as an art gallery and Jamaican food spot

The east side's Liquor Basket next to the Faygo factory is a triple threat. What to expect: Shop at the strip-mall liquor store in Detroit for alcohol and snacks, while walking through a gallery's worth of art and waiting on your order of carryout Jamaican food. State of play: Among the store's shelves, Push Gallery shows and sells local artists, while restaurant vendor Jamaica Mi Hungry 313 started serving jerk chicken, oxtail and more this fall from a walk-up window. The Black-owned business — in a city with few Black-owned liquor stores — is focused on community, hosting arts-centric events. Art and booze. Photo: Annalise Frank/Axios Context: Artist and owner Dominick Lemonious's family opened Liquor Basket in 2020, according to Planet Detroit . Around 2023, the art gallery aspect started to take shape. Zoom in: Liquor Basket sells the liquor-store usuals, but it also showcases Black-owned wine and liquor brands. 💭 Annalise's thought bubble: The booze offerings would probably pair well with Jamaica Mi Hungry 313's jerk chicken meal ($17). I tried the deeply flavored dish with smoky chicken and fresh veggies. The portion is plentiful. Fresh juice with mango and strawberry elevated the experience. Abdul El-Sayed is for 'shawarma law'. Where to try his favorite, others

Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. What makes for good shawarma? If you've already tried El-Sayed's favorite, here's a look at five other places to try to the food first created in Turkey. More: El-Sayed calls Vance habibi in victory speech. What does it mean? What is shawarma? Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish made from thin slices of marinated meat — usually chicken, beef, lamb,

Owner of Kuzzo's in Detroit accused of sales tax fraud

The owner of a once-popular Detroit restaurant is accused of violating the state's tax laws, officials said Thursday, Nov. 5. Ronald Bartell was arraigned Tuesday, Nov. 3, in 54A District Court in Lansing, according to court records, about nine months after he suddenly closed Kuzzo's Chicken & Waffles, his Detroit restaurant, in February. The 44-year-old Detroit resident is charged with five counts of failing to file a tax return or filing a false return, the Michigan Attorney General's Office said. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for each felony count. A judge set his bond at $20,000 and scheduled a probable cause conference for Nov. 12. A preliminary exam is set for Nov. 19, court records said. Bartell's attorney, Harrell Milhouse, said Thursday he and his client had no comment on the case. Prosecutors allege the defendant, who established Kuzzo’s LLC and operated Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles in Detroit from 2015 until 2026, violated the state sales tax law. "Michigan businesses are expected to properly collect, report, and remit the sales tax they collect to the state Department of Treasury," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "Sales tax revenue provides essential funding to
