Copper Country Humane Society seeks support after large influx of dogs
HOUGHTON, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — The Copper Country Humane Society is asking for community support after taking in 28 dogs from an overcrowded living situation. According to the shelter's Facebook page , the dogs were voluntarily surrendered by their owner, who recognized that caring for so many animals had become overwhelming and was no longer a healthy situation for either the pets or the people involved. While the dogs are reported to be in good body condition, shelter staff say they are dealing with fleas and parasites and will require vaccinations, medical evaluations and quarantine before they can be made available for adoption. Two mother dogs with newborn puppies have been placed into foster care, while the remaining dogs, most believed to be 2 years old or younger, are adjusting to their new environment. The influx of animals is expected to cost the shelter thousands of dollars in food, veterinary care and supplies. The Copper Country Humane Society is seeking monetary donations as well as dog food, toys, leashes, harnesses and bedding to help care for the animals.
