Former Smyrna star Cameron Edge leads Morgan State into Delaware State matchup

Easton council alters sign fee guidelines

EASTON — The Easton Town Council made changes to the current sign fee guidelines on Monday night, in the midst of an overhaul of the town’s fee schedule. Recent meetings have included fee discussions surrounding trash pick-up, mattress disposal and more. At its meeting Monday night, the council suggested alterations to sign fees. Under previous guidelines, signs were considered either permanent or limited duration signs. Regardless of the type of sign, it required a town-issued permit, which cost $150. Permanent signs were charged once, while limited duration signs had to renew their permit — and pay the fee — annually. Mayor Megan Cook says the town made $13,200 on sign fees last year. According to Town Manager Andy Kitzrow, a change was recommended. “I believe, talking with our planning and zoning director, there’s still an appetite to maintain for other signs a permit fee of $150,” Kitzrow told the council. “Our recommendation would be to modify it. If we were going to modify it at all, it would be to split that into two.” Town planning staff ultimately recommended distinguishing between permanent signs — which would still bear a permit fee — and free limited duration signs within town code.

Easton Airport reopens ahead of schedule

EASTON, Md. - Officials announced that the airport will be fully open for normal operations through Waterfowl Festival weekend. Easton Airport officials say Runaway 4/22 is open ahead of schedule thanks to the recent clear weather conditions. The runway was originally scheduled to close Nov. 16 through Nov. 24. That same runway is scheduled to close Nov. 30 through Dec. 18. It will remain open until Feb. 2027, when it will close again for several months.

EASTERN SHORE — On Tuesday, incumbent candidate Andy Harris defeated Dan Schwartz in the Maryland District 1 House race. Harris was first elected to serve in the House of Representatives in 2010. Prior to his time in the House of Representatives, Harris served in the Maryland State Senate for 12 years. Recently, Harris proposed millions of dollars in funding for District 1 as a part of a fiscal 2027 agriculture appropriations bill. Harris drew national attention on Oct. 13, after threatening to have a student reporter removed from a news conference. The incident occurred following a candidate forum held in Cambridge with Dan Schwartz. At an invitation only watch party held at Portside restaurant in Cambridge, FOX45 Rebecca spoke with Harris who self-declared victory early onTuesday night. MD school report cards released, Chapel Elementary rated five stars

EASTON — Talbot County’s five public elementary schools earned at least four stars on Maryland’s latest school report cards, with Chapel District Elementary School earning five stars. The annual report cards evaluate public schools on academic achievement, academic progress, progress toward English language proficiency, school quality and student success. High schools are also evaluated on graduation rates and readiness for postsecondary success. Talbot County’s elementary schools improved across all measures. Middle school results were mixed, while high school results improved from last year in graduation rates, progress toward English language proficiency and readiness for postsecondary success. Chapel District Elementary improved in every category and ranked in the 92nd percentile among Maryland schools. It earned 8.8 of 10 possible points for progress toward English language proficiency and 30 of 35 points for school quality and student success. Easton Elementary School rose from three to four stars, improving in all four major categories. Nearly all student groups improved in math proficiency and made gains in progress toward English language proficiency. Tilghman Elementary School also rose to four stars. Easton squadron marks 75 years, welcomes new commander

EASTON — The Easton Composite Squadron marked 75 years of service to the community Oct. 1 as Capt. David Putman took command from 1st Lt. Rick Mellinger. Lt. Col. Archie DeJesus, commander of Group 5, presided over the change of command ceremony for the Maryland Wing Civil Air Patrol unit at Saints Peter and Paul High School. State Sen. Johnny Mautz presented the squadron with a citation recognizing the service of past and present volunteers. Putman, a former Civil Air Patrol cadet, joined the Easton squadron in 2021 and has served as its emergency services officer, communications officer and education and training officer. A graduate of the National Emergency Services Academy, he is qualified as a ground team leader, mission observer, mission scanner and aerial photographer. He was named Maryland Wing Professional Development Officer of the Year in 2024 and Operations Staff Officer of the Year in 2025. In 2024, Putman deployed to Asheville, North Carolina, to support Federal Emergency Management Agency relief efforts after Hurricane Helene. He earned the Civil Air Patrol’s Find Ribbon for locating active emergency beacons on the Eastern Shore and received a Certificate of Recognition for Lifesaving for helping a person in cardiac arrest.
