SF votes on public transit: Where the races stand

Voters in the Bay Area’s five most-populous counties are shaping the future of mass transit in the region in Tuesday's election. San Francisco voters cast ballots for propositions G and H. The former would re-open a two-mile stretch of Great Highway to vehicle traffic on weekdays , while the latter would create a parcel tax to fund Muni service . City residents also joined voters in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in deciding whether or not to support a regional sales tax to fund public transportation, in the form of Proposition RTM . There is also a seat up for grabs on the BART board of directors. Here are where races stand as of 8:45 p.m. Tuesday night in preliminary tallies posted by the San Francisco Department of Elections, with 28.8% reporting. Proposition G For the third time, San Francisco voters are answering the question of whether or not to re-open a two-mile portion of what was formerly Great Highway to vehicular traffic. Proposition G qualified for the ballot this summer, after a petition collected more than 15,000 signatures, setting the Election Day stage for whether or not the area between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard

San Francisco's Upper Great Highway: Results of Proposition G

San Francisco residents have voted to keep the city closed to private vehicles for the second time in two years, opting to maintain its newest Coastal park, the Sunset Dunes. The San Francisco Chronicle called the measure. As of 11 p.m., residents have voted no on Prop G, with 109,160 (62.8%) voting in opposition and 64,656 (37.2%) voting yes. What is Prop G? At the center of Prop G is a simple question: whether voters want to reconsider the city's decision to renovate a two-mile stretch of the Upper Great Highway into the coastal park, Sunset Dunes. During the pandemic, the city temporarily closed the Upper Great Highway to weekend commuters, giving residents an outdoor area for social distancing and recreation. In 2024, voters considered Proposition K, which asked whether to permanently close the Upper Great Highway to motor vehicles seven days a week and use it as a public open recreation space. Ultimately, Prop K passed, earning 206,042 votes in support, or about 54% of the vote. The city of San Francisco then spent about $820,000 in public funds to create Sunset Dunes Park, removing old traffic signals and renovating the area for public use. As of June 2026,
