FAYETTEVILLE — The city’s Housing Authority is ready to issue housing vouchers for the first time in more than five years. Commonly known as Section 8, the authority’s housing choice voucher waitlist closed in early 2021 amid noncompliance issues with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The authority accrued more than $200,000 in debt when it used a development nonprofit to purchase and rehabilitate properties for low-income housing. Through its nonprofit, the authority used public dollars to pay its employees to maintain and rehabilitate what were legally private properties, which was a violation of federal regulations.

One flea market in Fayetteville has a trucker hat bar. Another shop in Russellville packs 200 vendors into 15,000 square feet. I have a thing for places that sound slightly impossible on paper. Arkansas has plenty of them. One Harrison barn stacks vinyl records and vintage toys on two levels.
In one Ozark Mountain town, hundreds of glowing trees light up a drive-through display on Thanksgiving night. The holiday weekend also brings a Nutcracker ballet, a big downtown shopping day, and a towering tree lighting in a spring-fed park. That is a lot of holiday cheer for the last week...

One antique shop on an Ozark highway is known for fair prices, even in a town where antique shopping often costs a bundle. That alone made me sit up. A bargain in a tourist town? I need to see that. It doesn’t stop there. One stop on this list packs...
