Heartbreak at the Breslin for Morenci girls basketball in state semifinal loss
EAST LANSING – Heartbreak accompanied Morenci basketball’s magical trip to the Breslin Center for the girls Division 4 semifinals, as struggles with turnovers and a cold second half shooting led to the Bulldogs falling to Ishpeming, 37-34. The final three-point advantage for Ishpeming was their largest lead of the night, a lead they were able to attain just twice throughout the entirety of the game. The road to the Breslin Center for Ishpeming was a rather long one, not only because of the six-hour drive from the Upper Peninsula, but also because of the 26 inches of snow that was dropped on the town between Monday and Tuesday, a big enough obstacle for any team. “My hats off to not only these girls, but our parents, the town, the administrators, and everyone that had a hand on getting us here, I mean logistically this was not an easy trip, it took us a long time just to find viable roads to get us down here,” Ishpeming coach Ryan Reichel said. "These girls, man they had it easy, they got to ride down on a charter bus and stay in a nice hotel while the rest of us worked hard to

Everyone else who witnessed the first meeting between the two teams on February 6, a 55-52 victory for Westwood, no doubt had a potential Maroons-Patriots rematch circled on their calendar the minute playoff brackets were announced. Round 2 lived up to the hype and then some, as the two Upper Peninsula hoop heavyweights slugged it out for 32 grueling minutes before Menominee came away with a 59-46 triumph on Tuesday. Down by one at halftime, the Maroons rallied behind a 15-point outburst in the second half by Tanner Theuerkauf to punch their ticket to Thursday’s Regional championship against Elk Rapids in Newberry. Menominee (21-4 overall) scratched and clawed its way back to seize its first lead since the first quarter off a bucket by Dylan Beal with 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Ethan Marta responded with a basket of his own to tie matters up at 36-36 but Westwood never regained the lead, as the Maroons closed out the frame on a
