A Vernell Brown III-Eugene Wilson pairing would be ‘unstoppable’ top recruit says

ORLANDO — The coaches aren’t the only ones at Florida recruiting 4-star receiver Vernell Brown III of Orlando (Fla.) Jones. He said Sunday he also hears from one of the biggest names on the roster — touted freshman quarterback DJ Lagway .

“He just tells me the way the system is and that my play stye is perfect (for it),” Brown told Gators Online. “It goes hand in hand.”

Lagway was a 5-star recruit in the 2024 class. He enrolled at Florida for the spring semester and already is the team’s No. 2 quarterback.The chance to play with him is appealing, according to Brown, who saw the Gators practice in person this spring.

“He’s really good,” Brown said. “Obviously, you saw where he was as a recruit coming out. He’s still a freshman. He still has a long way to go but where he’s at now, he’s definitely going to be special.”

Meanwhile, Brown also has envisioned what it would be like to line up in the same offense as Gators receiver Eugene Wilson , who is coming off a stellar freshman season.

“I think it would be extremely fun to have him as my teammate,” Brown said. “It would be unstoppable.”

Brown is a big target for Florida. He is the No. 9 receiver and No. 61 overall recruit in the country for the On3 Industry Rankings.

Ohio State is the current On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine favorite for Brown and the Buckeyes will host him on an official visit May 31.. Meanwhile, the Gators will host Brown on a June 14 official. FSU and others also are in the mix.

For the Gators, player development has been a big selling point in Brown’s recruitment. And to Brown, it was significant that Florida’s Ricky Pearsall was picked in the first round (31st overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Draft.

“I just think it goes along with what they’ve been telling me all along,” said Vernell Brown III , a player high on the Gators’ recruiting board. “Just looking at Ricky, where he was when he first got there, now a first-round pick. I think it speaks volumes of the development beyond what they tell me. They have evidence to back it up.”

Where does development rank among the top things to be considered in his recruitment?

“It’s definitely up there,” Brown said. “But I think it’s more of a group of factors, than one, two, three, four. It’s definitely in that group because at the end of the day in practice we’re constantly trying to better ourselves and work on our craft. And just perfect the position.”
