Treichler wins Wright County sheriff's race with 76% of vote

WRIGHT COUNTY — Chief Deputy Matt Treichler will become Wright County's next sheriff after defeating fellow Sheriff's Office veteran Rob Mossman by a decisive margin in Tuesday's election. Treichler received 43,303 votes, or 75.63%, compared with Mossman's 13,713 votes, or 23.95%, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office. Treichler spent election night at Spilled Grain Brewhouse in his hometown of Annandale, surrounded by family, friends and supporters as the results came in. The Nov. 3 election determined who will succeed Sheriff Sean Deringer, who announced in January that he would not seek a third term. Deringer, first elected in 2018, plans to retire at the end of the year. Treichler, 48, has spent more than 25 years with the Wright County Sheriff's Office, including the past eight years as chief deputy. As second-in-command, he oversees the agency's daily operations, including a budget of approximately $52 million and more than 310 employees. In a postelection statement on his campaign Facebook page, Treichler thanked residents for their support. “I'm incredibly grateful for your trust, your support, and the opportunity to serve as your next sheriff,” he wrote. “I'm excited about what lies ahead and ready to get to

Meyer wins mayor’s race, ready to get to work

David C. Meyer knew what a loss would mean. His term on the Little Falls City Council was expiring. Rather than seek another term, he chose to run for mayor. If voters went another direction, his time at City Hall would be over. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, they gave him a different job. Meyer defeated incumbent Mayor Greg J. Zylka by 180 votes in a four-way race, receiving 1,059 votes, or 37.65%, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office. Zylka received 879 votes, or 31.25%. Laura Czech finished third with 769 votes, or 27.34%, followed by Tony (Anthony) Schmolke with 97 votes, or 3.45%. Nine write-in votes were recorded. Results remain unofficial until canvassed. For Meyer, who is completing his first council term, the outcome brought relief — and an eagerness to begin. “I’m excited to get to work for Little Falls,” he said in an interview Wednesday, Nov. 4. Meyer said he began laying the groundwork for a mayoral run in the spring. His council service had put him in regular contact with residents and their concerns. He wanted a stronger voice in addressing them. Support from his family and people in the community helped

Monticello data center debate puts public trust to test

MONTICELLO — What does transparency look like when a community is divided over a controversial development? In Monticello, the question has become central to the debate over the proposed Edmonson Business Center, a roughly 547-acre hyperscale data center development proposed by Monticello Tech LLC south of 85th Street NE and east of Highway 25. The proposal has raised questions about electricity demand, water use, noise from backup generators and the financial obligations associated with the development. Some residents have accused city officials of withholding information or failing to adequately address their concerns, while others say the information is available but want more explanation of how and why decisions are being made. The city has published studies, development applications and meeting materials on its website. Public meetings have been livestreamed and recorded, an open house was held on the area’s environmental review, and government records have been made available upon request. Yet as the proposal approaches a pivotal City Council hearing Nov. 9, disagreement persists over whether making information available is the same as being transparent. For some, transparency means providing access to information and opportunities for public participation. For others, it means explaining decisions, acknowledging unanswered questions and demonstrating that

Seat Cover Solutions project takes another step forward

MONTICELLO — Plans for Seat Cover Solutions’ proposed $11 million headquarters and distribution center in Monticello took another step forward Oct. 26, as the City Council approved a preliminary plat for the development. The approval comes just two weeks after the council endorsed a revised state grant application for the fast-growing automotive accessories company, which recently doubled the size of its proposed facility from 55,000 to 110,000 square feet. The development is planned for approximately 11.6 acres in Otter Creek Business Park, where Seat Cover Solutions intends to consolidate its warehouse, distribution and office operations. The proposed building would include 18 loading docks and approximately 4,775 square feet of office space, with room for future office expansion. The facility is expected to accommodate approximately 40 employees. In a separate action Oct. 26, the council also approved removing existing drainage and utility easements to allow two parcels to be combined into one property for the development. Required easements will be reestablished as part of the new plat. The plans also call for a separate easement to protect an existing wood-chip trail connecting Chelsea Road to Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park.
