Saginaw-area sports highlights: Freeland earns split in battle of ranked baseball teams
Liam Rump capped a Freeland rally, giving the No. 4-ranked Falcons a win Thursday over Beal City. The Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to overtake the Aggies for a 7-6 win in the opener of a doubleheader between two ranked teams. Beal City is ranked second in Division 4.
Midland track star sets new shot put record
ONA, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Cabell Midland senior Michael Lunsford is now in select company in the shot put. Over the weekend, he broke Randy Barnes’ record of 66 feet and 9.5 inches with a throw of 68 feet and 6 inches at the Tudor’s Charleston Relays. It had been a record that was set back in 1985. WSAZ Sports caught up with Lunsford as he’s preparing for the state meet coming up in mid-May.

Swan Valley scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to finish off a softball doubleheader sweep of Heritage. Milagro Perez claimed wins in both games, throwing a three-hitter in a 14-2 win in the opener. She followed with four innings of shutout relief in an 8-4 victory in the nightcap.

Clare baseball scores a pair of conference wins over Sanford Meridian
SANFORD - The Clare Pioneers earned a pair of important Jack Pine Conference victories on Tuesday, topping Sanford Meridian 8-4 in game one, and 13-5 in the nightcap. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game, but the Mustangs battled back, and tied the game up at 3-3 in the third inning. It would stay that way into the seventh inning, when the Pioneers’ offense would strike for five runs to earn the win. Meridian started the second game with a quick 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers’ offense once again took over from there on the way to earning the doubleheader sweep. Clare (12-3-1, 3-0-1 JPC) hosts Gladwin on Thursday, May 2. Sanford Meridian (9-7-1, 2-2 JPC) travels to Harrison on the same day.
