A Town Smothered in Chile
Seven spouts of fire roast a cage full of peppers, thirty pounds of chiles blistering and spinning in tantric motion. Out the back of the roaster, green sludge and bits of blackened skin pour onto the asphalt. The sign in front—DiTomaso Farms—is singed and ashen, and once in a while, there is respite from the flames: A vendor hoses the peppers down and envelops them in a cloud of smoke. This smoke, however, wafts into the nearby booths, where families turn into choruses of coughs and complaints. A child cried, maybe two.

A city ballot measure proposed by Mayor Heather Graham seeking to raise sales taxes to fund the Pueblo Fire Department and public safety technology was resoundingly shot down by voters on Election Day. However, voters approved two other measures to continue funding the Pueblo City-County Library District and provide a new source of steady funding for the Pueblo Zoo. Preliminary results reported by the Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder’s Office show Pueblo voters rejected City of Pueblo Ballot Measure 2A by a nearly 2-to-1 margin, with 64% voting against it as of Nov. 5.
