GM/JATCO site referendum passes

JANESVILLE — On Wednesday morning, the 250-acre, former Janesville General Motors/JATCO site will continue to be blighted, vacant, disused, overgrown with brush and strewn with rubble — with major environmental cleanup needed. But the difference is that now, if a developer wants to build out an industrial project across 100 acres of the site, and it’ll cost more than $450 million, voters automatically get authority to approve or deny it. The numbers aren’t official until the county canvass meeting, but with the unofficial total vote in on the referendum question at press time, 16,779 residents in Janesville had voted “Yes” to the referendum, compared to 9,932 votes who voted “No.” It means voters will have the authority to OK larger-ticket items at the GM/JATCO site, either through special or regular elections. It came after a weeks-long information war between business interests and labor groups favoring a reduction in red tape, and grassroots neighborhood organizers who wanted the public’s voice to ring just as loudly as a prospective developer’s. Berman has an unofficial lead against Steil

JANESVILLE--At press time, Democratic candidate Mitchell Berman had the unofficial lead against incumbent Congressman Bryan Steil, with 93% of votes counted as of 11:12 p.m. Tuesday night. At 11:12 p.m. the votes reflected: Bryan Steil (I): 139,249 votes 47.8%Mitchell Berman: 152,273 votes 52.2% The two candidates were neck and neck all night, which made the race to close to call even with a majority of the votes estimated to have been counted late Tuesday. If he wins, Berman would be the first Democrat in 31 years to serve as int the first Congressional District. Republicans have held the district since 1995. Republican incumbent Rep. Bryan Steil campaigned for a fifth term and faced off against Democrat Mitchell Berman, an emergency room nurse. According to the Associated Press, Steil had out-raised Berman as of mid-October with $6.4 million to $2 million. Berman lives in rural Racine County with his wife and two daughters. He has campaigned on a message of bringing down the cost of living, fixing a broken healthcare system, and ending corruption in Washington. More than 67,800 voters turn out in Rock County, making real turnout more than half of eligible voters

JANESVILLE — Despite rainy weather Tuesday, more than 67,800 voters cast ballots in Rock County’s Nov. 3 general election, an increase of more than 2,200 voters compared to the 2022 election. Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson said 67,812 voters cast ballots. That represents a little more than half of the 129,654 eligible voters in Rock County. Unofficial election results can be found on the Rock County website. Tollefson said the voter registration numbers displayed on the county’s website reflect registered voters as of 20 days before the election. Based on that figure of 97,850 registered voters, the turnout would be just under 70%. However, Wisconsin allows voters to register on Election Day, meaning the number of eligible voters can differ from the number of registered voters listed before the election. Tollefson said she noticed increased engagement during this year’s election, including a larger number of election observers. At Janesville City Hall, she said there were six observers. She said there was a steady flow of voters throughout the day. While there were occasional bursts of activity, turnout remained consistent. 44th Assembly District *(D) Ann Roe (I) — 14,786 (R) Ron Woodman — 9,144 JANESVILLE — The incumbent Democrat Ann Roe holds onto her seat in Wisconsin’s 44th Assembly District, holding off challenger Ron Woodman, a Republican who’d looked to make the jump in politics from Rock County Board to the state Legislature. Roe won the district handily in Tuesday’s election, retaining the seat for a second term in the district that encompasses much of Janesville’s west and south sides. Roe was nominated initially in 2024 when 44th Assembly Rep. Sue Conley announced she planned to step down. Roe is a supporter of raising the minimum wage to $20 an hour, has campaigned in local appearances on topics including affordability, women’s health, health care and the impact of tariffs on local retail. Woodman, the Republican who considers himself a conservative, said he’d listened to rural voters who told him they’re concerned about the cost of living and the proliferation of solar energy projects and large-scale expansion of transmission lines.
